Xi'an Coffee: Independent Roasters and Old Town Cafes

Tea is the older habit in Xi'an, and the city still runs on it, but coffee has taken hold with a speed that surprises visitors who expect nothing but teahouses. The growth is concentrated in three areas: the lanes of the old city inside the wall, the streets around the South Gate and the Shuncheng Alley that follows the moat, and the university and tech districts to the south, where the customers are students and software engineers.

What the good places do
Xi'an's better cafes roast their own beans or buy from small domestic roasters, and they take filter coffee seriously - single origins from Yunnan, Ethiopia and Colombia on the board, brewed by hand while you wait. Yunnan arabica has improved sharply over the last decade and appears on most local menus; it is worth trying alongside the imported lots to taste the difference. Espresso-based drinks are made to a Chinese palate, which means a latte is milkier and often sweeter than you expect unless you ask for it unsweetened.

Where to sit
The charm of the old city cafes is the setting: converted courtyard houses, upper floors looking over grey tile roofs, or a doorway opening straight onto a hutong lane. In Shuncheng Alley the cafes put stools outside under the wall, which is the best place in Xi'an for an afternoon coffee when the weather is good. Cafes near the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower are convenient rather than special, and the ones inside the main shopping streets are busiest at weekends.

Practical notes
Opening hours are late by Western standards; many independent cafes open at ten and run until eight or nine in the evening. Most take mobile payment and many do not take foreign cards, so carry cash or set up a Chinese wallet before you arrive. Cafes in Xi'an are generally happy for you to sit for hours with one drink, which makes them useful as a base between sights. If you want the coffee to be part of the plan rather than a break from it, ask at a good hostel or a specialty roaster for their own recommendations - the scene is small and the staff know each other.
