Zhangjiajie in 2026: Visa-Free Entry, Avatar Mountains and the Glass Bridge

The short answer
Zhangjiajie is the sandstone pillar forest in northwestern Hunan Province that inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. Citizens of 50 countries can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, and citizens of 57 countries — including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia — can enter visa-free for up to 240 hours (10 days) when transiting to a third country, flying in through Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG). A private, guided Zhangjiajie itinerary needs a minimum of four days.
Can you visit Zhangjiajie without a visa?
Two separate policies can apply, and they work differently.
1. Unilateral visa-free entry — 30 days, no onward ticket needed. China currently grants visa-free entry to ordinary-passport holders of 50 countries for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits and transit, for stays of up to 30 days. For 48 of those countries the policy runs until 31 December 2026; Russia's arrangement runs until 31 December 2027, and Brunei has no expiry date. Students attending summer or winter study camps in China for no more than 30 days are covered by the same terms. Citizens of Singapore and Malaysia travel under separate mutual visa-exemption agreements rather than this list.
2. 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit — needs a ticket out of China. Travellers from 57 countries, including the United States, can stay up to 240 hours without a visa if they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and enter through one of 65 approved ports. Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is port number 38 on the official National Immigration Administration list, and Hunan Province grants full provincial access under the policy. The 240-hour clock starts at 00:00 on the day after arrival, so a traveller landing on the afternoon of 1 September is covered from 2 September.
Everyone else needs a visa obtained before departure through a Chinese embassy, consulate or Chinese Visa Application Service Center. Working, studying and journalism are outside the scope of both visa-free routes.
Practical note for tour groups: visa-free entry applies to escorted groups and independent travellers alike. Our guides still recommend carrying a hotel list and a copy of your itinerary, because border officers may ask how your visit matches the permitted purpose.
What makes Zhangjiajie different
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was established in 1982 as China's first national forest park, and the wider Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. The landscape is a sea of more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars, many over 200 metres high and some approaching 1,000 metres, rising out of subtropical forest. The area is also a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan. Yuanjiajie is the headline zone: its Southern Sky Column — officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in January 2010 — is the formation that appears in the film. Nearby are the Enchanting Platform, the Natural Bridge and the Backyard Garden. Tianzi Mountain, named after a 14th-century Tujia leader, has its own viewpoints at He Long Park and a cable car descent. The Bailong Elevator, built onto a cliff face, lifts visitors roughly 326 metres in about two minutes and holds Guinness recognition as an outdoor elevator. Below it, Golden Whip Stream runs 7.5 km through the valley floor — flat, shaded and the easiest walk in the park.
Tianmen Mountain. Rising to 1,519 metres directly above Zhangjiajie city, Tianmen Mountain is reached by a cableway 7,455 metres long, one of the longest passenger cableways in the world. Tongtian Avenue climbs to the summit through 99 hairpin bends, and 999 steps lead up to Tianmen Cave, a natural arch roughly 131 metres high and 57 metres wide. The cliff-hanging walkway and the glass skywalk are bolted to a rock face about 1,400 metres above the valley.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and the glass bridge. The Grand Canyon's glass-bottomed bridge, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, opened on 20 August 2016. It spans 430 metres and hangs around 300 metres above the canyon floor across 99 panels of glass. It is a separate ticket from the national park and requires a timed reservation.
Beyond the peaks. Yellow Dragon Cave and Baofeng Lake sit in the same Wulingyuan area, and the Tujia minority culture of northwestern Hunan is on show at Xibu Street and in the Charm of Xiangxi stage production in the evenings.
When to go
The best months are March to May and September to November, when the weather is clear and the seas of cloud that make the pillars look like floating islands are most likely. Summer is hot, wet and crowded; winter is quiet and often beautiful but icy underfoot. Mountain summits run 5–8°C cooler than Zhangjiajie city, and rain arrives quickly, so pack layers and a light rain shell rather than an umbrella.
How many days do you need?
Three nights is the practical minimum; four nights is comfortable. A common structure is: one day for Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon glass bridge, one full day inside the national park for Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, and a final morning at Golden Whip Stream or Yellow Dragon Cave before departure. Groups that want to add Baofeng Lake, Zhangjiajie's Tujia villages or the Fenghuang ancient town should plan five to six days.

Budget the following gate prices per person (subject to seasonal change and confirmed at the time of booking):
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: about RMB 228–239 for a four-day pass, including unlimited use of the eco-shuttle bus network.
Tianmen Mountain: about RMB 275–288 for the package including the cableway.
Grand Canyon + glass bridge: about RMB 178–219.
Bailong Elevator: about RMB 72 one way; Tianzi Mountain cable car similar.
Yellow Dragon Cave: about RMB 118–121 including the underground boat.
Timed-entry slots for the park, Tianmen Mountain and the glass bridge sell out in peak season. Reserve several days ahead. Carry your physical passport every day — it is required for ticket collection, and digital copies are not accepted. Licensed guides can pre-book on your behalf, which is usually the difference between seeing the park and queueing for it.
Getting there and getting around
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) has direct domestic connections from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Xi'an, and is an approved 240-hour transit port. The high-speed rail station, Zhangjiajie West, links to Changsha in about 2.5 hours. Inside the region, attractions are spread across Wulingyuan, the city centre and Cili County — 40 minutes to an hour apart by road — so a private vehicle and driver make a measurable difference to how much you actually see.
On payments: Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept international Visa and Mastercard cards, and foreign passport holders can buy train tickets on the official ticketing platform in English. Both remove most of the friction that used to define a first trip to China.
Sample four-day structure
Day 1 — Arrival. Private transfer from DYG or Zhangjiajie West, hotel check-in, and an evening at leisure.
Day 2 — Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon glass bridge. Cableway to the summit, the 99 bends, the glass skywalk and 999 steps to Tianmen Cave; then the glass bridge over the Grand Canyon. Evening: Charm of Xiangxi or a Tujia dinner on Xibu Street.
Day 3 — Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie and Avatar Hallelujah Mountain; the Enchanting Platform; Tianzi Mountain; cable car down.
Day 4 — Golden Whip Stream or Yellow Dragon Cave, then departure.

Do I need to carry my passport in the park?
Yes. Passports are required for ticket collection and hotel check-in throughout China, and digital copies are not accepted. Keep a paper copy separately as a backup.
What is the best time of year to visit Zhangjiajie?
