How to Apply for a China Visa in 2026: Forms, Documents and Timelines

Last updated: October 2026

Applying for a China visa in 2026 happens in two stages: you complete the form online and upload your documents, then bring your physical passport to a Chinese embassy, consulate or visa application center. Standard processing takes about four business days from the day your passport is submitted. Before you start, check whether an exemption already covers your trip.

Do you actually need a visa in 2026?

Start with the exemptions, because they are broader than most travelers expect and they are frequently confused with one another. China runs three separate schemes.

  • Unilateral visa-free entry. Ordinary passport holders from 50 countries may enter for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transit for up to 30 days without a visa. The list covers France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Russia, Canada and the United Kingdom. The arrangement currently runs to December 31, 2026; Brunei has no end date.
  • 240-hour visa-free transit. Holders of ordinary passports from 57 countries with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region may enter through any of 65 open ports in 24 provincial-level regions and stay up to 240 hours, or 10 days. Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam were added on August 20, 2026, according to the National Immigration Administration.
  • Hainan 30-day entry. Nationals of 61 countries may enter Hainan Province visa-free for up to 30 days.

None of the three covers work, study or news reporting. A stay longer than 30 days, or a purpose outside those categories, needs a visa. See our guides to the 30-day visa-free policy and to choosing an entry route.

Which visa type should you apply for?

The class follows the purpose of the trip rather than its length.

Visa Purpose Typical applicant
L Tourism Holiday and leisure travel
M Commercial and trade activity Business travel, trade fairs
F Non-commercial exchange and visits Delegations, academic exchange
Q1 and Q2 Family reunion or short family visit Relatives of Chinese citizens
X1 and X2 Study longer or shorter than 180 days University and school programs
Z Work Employment in China
G Transit Travelers crossing China

School groups are a common sticking point, because the class depends on how the program is structured and how long the students stay. Our study tour visa guide works through that case.

How do you complete the online application?

China has moved to an online-first process. Most missions now direct applicants to the portal at consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/, which replaced the older COVA form at a rolling pace through late 2025 and early 2026; some missions still cite the original COVA address at cova.cs.mfa.gov.cn. Whichever address yours publishes, the workflow is the same.

  • Register with an email address. One account can file for several people, but every traveler receives a separate application number.
  • Complete all nine sections: personal information, visa type, employment, education, family, travel details, previous travel history, other information and the declaration.
  • Upload your supporting documents, including the passport bio page, a compliant photograph and whatever your visa class requires.
  • Print the barcode page and sign it. Once submitted, the form can no longer be edited.

The photograph is the single most common reason an application stalls. The specification is 33 mm by 48 mm on a plain white background, uploaded as a JPEG, and the system rejects a photo taken for another country on background tint or head size.

If the review team needs more, the status changes to a request for supplementary material and you upload again. When it reads that your passport should be submitted, the online stage is finished. You then have 30 days to hand in the physical documents; miss that window and the order is cancelled.

Where do you submit your passport?

There are two routes, and which one applies depends on where you live.

  • Directly at the embassy or consulate. In the United States, applicants no longer need an appointment, and a family member or courier may deliver the passport. Since January 1, 2024, US applicants for a tourist visa have also not needed flight bookings, hotel reservations, an itinerary or an invitation letter.
  • At a Chinese Visa Application Service Center. In many countries the mission has delegated intake to a commercial center. Most require a booked appointment, and the center charges a service fee on top of the government fee.

Either way the physical file is the same: your original passport with at least six months of validity and blank pages, the printed barcode page and signed form, a photograph if the digital copy was refused, and the documents specific to your class.

What documents do you need?

Every file opens with a small basic set, then adds material tied to the visa class.

Requirement Who provides it
Passport, 6 or more months validity, blank pages All applicants
Printed and signed form with barcode All applicants
Recent colour photograph, white background All applicants
Invitation letter from a Chinese host or partner M and F applicants
Admission notice and JW201 or JW202 form X1 and X2 applicants
Proof of family relationship and host identification Q1, Q2, S1 and S2 applicants
Work permit notification Z applicants

For M and F applicants the invitation letter is read closely. It has to carry the invited person's details, the purpose and dates of the visit, the places to be visited, who is paying, and the inviting organization's name, address, stamp and signature. A generic letter that omits financial responsibility or the itinerary is regularly sent back.

Children need their own application and their own visa. For applicants under 18, expect to supply a birth certificate showing both parents, copies of the parents' passports, and a signed consent letter from any parent who is not travelling.

How long does processing take, and what does it cost?

Timing runs from the moment the mission or center receives your passport, not from the moment you submit the online form.

Service Typical time Notes
Standard 4 business days Counted from passport submission
Express 2 to 3 business days Extra fee; not offered for some classes
Visa center intake 3 to 4 working days Plus mailing time

Most missions advise filing at least two weeks before departure, and longer in summer and around Chinese public holidays. Visa fees have been held at reduced rates through December 31, 2026.

Nationality Fee Entry types covered
United States USD 140 Single, double or multiple entry
Schengen countries EUR 45 Single, double or multiple entry
Canada Around CAD 50 Single, double or multiple entry
Other nationalities USD 25 single, 37 double, 50 six-month multiple, 74 annual multiple Priced by entry count

Visa centers add their own service fee, typically USD 25 to 65 by location, and express handling is charged separately. Fees are set in local currency and mirror what your government charges Chinese applicants, so the figures move with exchange rates. Confirm the amount with the office handling your file; our guide for US passport holders sets out the American case.

Fingerprints are no longer taken from short-stay applicants. Anyone applying for a visa of 180 days or less is currently exempt from biometric collection; prints are still required for the residence-related classes, including D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z.

What changed on September 15, 2026?

The State Council issued Order No. 841, the Regulations on Exit and Entry Administration, which took effect on September 15, 2026. It runs to 19 articles, and three matter to anyone filling in a visa form.

  • The purpose must be genuine. Applicants must state a true and lawful reason for entry and cooperate with identity checks. Providing false material or a false statement is now an explicit ground for refusing entry.
  • Inviting parties are accountable. Organizations and individuals that issue invitation letters are responsible for the accuracy of what they write.
  • Intermediaries must register. Agencies handling exit-entry paperwork for a fee must file with the local immigration authority within 15 days of establishment; firms already operating had 90 days from the effective date to register.

The practical consequence is that the paperwork you sign is treated as a factual claim rather than a formality. Read the invitation letter and itinerary before they go in, even when an agency prepares them. Our plain-English summary of the new exit and entry rules has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a China visa entirely online?

No. The form and documents are filed online, but your physical passport must be handed in for review. In some countries another person or a courier can deliver it, but the passport itself has to be presented before a visa can be printed.

Do US citizens need an appointment?

No. Applicants at US missions submit documents without an appointment, and a third party may deliver the passport. Visa centers in most other countries do require a booked slot, and arriving without one is usually refused.

How far in advance should I apply?

Most missions recommend filing at least two weeks before departure, plus time for the online review stage. Allow a wider margin in summer and around Chinese public holidays.

Do I still have to give fingerprints?

Short-stay applicants, meaning a permitted stay of 180 days or less, are currently exempt. Prints are still collected for the D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z classes, which lead to a residence permit.

Does a visa guarantee that I will be admitted?

No. A visa lets you travel to a Chinese port of entry and apply for admission, and the border inspection authority makes the final decision. Under the September 2026 rules a false statement at that stage can itself result in refusal.

Can I extend a visa once I am in China?

You can apply for an extension of stay at the local public security entry-exit administration before the current permission expires, but approval is not automatic. Overstaying is treated as a violation.

LinkedTours maps the visa calendar against the itinerary before anything is booked. For tailor-made itineraries, inbound leisure groups, business travel programs and study tours, passports go in first and flights second, so a slow review never becomes a missed departure.
