A comfortable independent trip to China costs about RMB 1,200 to 1,800 per person per day, covering a four-star room, high-speed rail between cities, site tickets and meals. A lean trip can run near RMB 600. A private guided itinerary starts higher, and the gap is almost entirely labor.
What Does a Day in China Cost in 2026?
Most budget confusion about China comes from mixing two different trips. Independent travel is cheap by Western European standards; guided private travel is not, because you are paying for a car, a licensed English-speaking guide and someone else's planning time on top of the same hotels and tickets.
The table below is a planning estimate, built from the published prices cited in this article. It is a range, not a quotation, and it excludes international airfare.
| Line item (per person per day) | Lean independent | Comfortable independent | Private guided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room, per night | RMB 250–400 | RMB 450–700 | RMB 900–1,600 |
| Meals | RMB 120–180 | RMB 200–300 | RMB 300–500 |
| Local transport | RMB 30–50 | RMB 60–100 | RMB 150–300 |
| Site tickets | RMB 60–120 | RMB 100–200 | RMB 100–200 |
| Guide and vehicle | — | — | RMB 700–1,200 |
| Planning total | RMB 600–850 | RMB 1,000–1,600 | RMB 2,300–3,500 |
At our standard quoting rate of RMB 6.5 to the US dollar, that is roughly US$92–131, US$154–246 and US$354–538 a day. Hotel choice is the single largest lever in all three columns.
What Do China's Headline Attractions Actually Charge?
Tickets are the most predictable part of a China budget, and the most misreported. These are the official gate prices as of October 2026.
| Site | Price | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Palace Museum, Beijing | RMB 60 April 1 to October 31; RMB 40 November 1 to March 31 | Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery RMB 10 each; student ticket RMB 20 |
| Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an | RMB 120 peak season; RMB 90 off-season | Covers both the pits and Lishan Garden; the shuttle between them is free |
| Xi'an City Wall | RMB 54 | Cycling RMB 45 for three hours on a single bike |
| Mutianyu Great Wall | RMB 40 | Shuttle RMB 15 return; cable car RMB 100 one way |
Two things quietly inflate this line. The Palace Museum sells no same-day tickets: reservations open seven days ahead, and morning slots go first. Almost every major site now runs a timed, real-name system, so a ticket you did not book is a ticket you do not have.
Inside the gates, add-ons stack up: cable cars, shuttle buses, golf-cart transfers at the larger parks and evening shows. On a five-day Beijing and Xi'an loop, plan RMB 500 to 700 per person for tickets alone once the internal transport is counted.
How Much Do Hotels Cost in China?
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism reports 7,586 star-rated hotels nationwide with an average room rate of RMB 360.2 per night and an average occupancy of 46.8 percent across 2025. That national figure blends every star level, so treat it as a floor rather than a guide for a foreign visitor booking a four-star room in a tier-one city.
In practice, room rate is where seasons show up hardest. Rates in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Chengdu move sharply around National Day, Spring Festival and the July to August school holiday; the same four-star room can cost double in the first week of October.
Hotel registration matters as much as price: foreign guests are registered by the property at check-in, and not every small guesthouse is set up to do it. Our guide to where to stay in China and the registration rules covers what to check before you book.
What Does Intercity Travel Cost?
High-speed rail is the reason a multi-city China trip works at all, and second class is genuinely cheap per kilometer. Fares below were checked against the 12306 booking system in October 2026.
| Route | Fastest journey | Second class |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing West to Xi'an North | 4h 10m | RMB 515.5–525 |
| Xi'an North to Chengdu East | 3h 07m | RMB 263–300 |
| Chengdu East to Guilin | about 5h | RMB 480–521 |
A 21-day rail loop across four regions lands in the RMB 1,500 to 2,000 range per person in second class, which is less than a single short-haul flight pair in many source markets. The trade-off is time in stations and the need to book popular morning departures early. Our 21-day grand tour by rail sets out where flying genuinely saves a day and where it does not.
How Much Do City Transport and Airport Transfers Add?
On the ground, China is inexpensive. Beijing's subway starts at RMB 3 for six kilometers, and most inner-city trips land between RMB 3 and RMB 6. Taxi and ride-hailing fares for a cross-town run typically sit between RMB 40 and RMB 80.
Airport transfers are the outlier, because the dedicated lines price separately from the metro:
- Beijing Capital Airport Express. RMB 25 flat fare to Dongzhimen, about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Beijing Daxing Airport Express. RMB 10, 25 or 35 by distance; RMB 50 for the business car.
- Shanghai Maglev from Pudong. RMB 50 one way, RMB 40 with a same-day boarding pass.
- Shanghai city airport link. RMB 26 between Hongqiao and Pudong.
One live caveat: Shanghai consulted in September 2026 on restructuring metro fares and had not enacted a final scheme when this was written, so confirm fares on arrival.
Which Line Items Blow Up a China Budget?
Five items account for almost every overrun we see.
- Holiday weeks. National Day, Spring Festival and the summer peak push hotel rates up before anything else moves.
- Star-level jumps. Moving from a good four-star to a five-star roughly doubles the room line, and the room line is the biggest block in the budget.
- Guide and vehicle days. A licensed English-speaking guide plus a car and driver is quoted per day, not per person, so small groups feel it most and large groups feel it least.
- Internal site transport. Cable cars, park shuttles and boat transfers are rarely in the headline ticket price.
- Change fees. Discounted rail tickets and prepaid rooms both carry penalties. A replanned week can cost more than the original booking.
Where Can You Cut Costs Without Losing the Trip?
Shift dates before you shift quality. A week in the first half of November or the second half of March costs materially less than early October, and the sites are emptier. Take second class on rail. Stay near a metro line rather than beside the attraction.
What does not work is shaving the guide. Skipping interpretation at the Terracotta Warriors or the Palace Museum saves a small line item and removes most of the reason you came.
When Is a Tailor-Made Quote Worth the Extra?
If your group is a family with children, a corporate delegation or a school study tour, the arithmetic changes. The value is not in the hotel, it is in the parts that fail quietly: a reservation window missed, a guide who cannot hold a group of 30, a vehicle that cannot take luggage for a two-week program.
For inbound leisure travelers, a tailor-made structure usually pays for itself when the itinerary crosses more than three cities or falls inside a holiday week. For business travel, the calculation is time, not money. For study tours, the fixed costs of supervision, insurance and adult-to-student ratios dominate, and those are the line items a DIY plan most often forgets. Our breakdown of what a tailor-made China trip actually includes sets out the scope.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 10-day trip to China cost?
For one traveler, a comfortable independent 10 days runs about RMB 10,000 to 16,000 on the ground, excluding international flights. A private guided version of the same route is closer to RMB 23,000 to 35,000. The spread is guide and vehicle days, not hotels.
Is China expensive for foreign tourists?
No, with one exception. Tickets, rail and food are cheap by European or North American standards. The exception is the peak holiday calendar, when hotel rates in the main cities rise sharply and availability tightens.
Should I budget for tips in China?
No. Tipping is not customary and is not expected in restaurants, taxis or hotels. Guides and drivers are paid through the tour price, and a gratuity is a gesture rather than an assumption.
When is the cheapest time to visit China?
The second half of November through mid-December, and March through mid-April, outside Spring Festival. Weather is workable in most regions and hotel rates fall back toward the national average. Our region-by-region calendar shows where the shoulder weeks land.
Do I need cash, or can I pay by phone?
Both, in that order of preparation. Mobile payment is near-universal, but a foreign card needs to be linked before you arrive, and a small cash reserve covers the cases where it is not accepted. See how to pay in China without a Chinese bank card.
How many days should I budget for to make the flights worthwhile?
Ten days is the practical minimum for two regions, and 14 gives you three without rushing. How many days you need in China works through the trade-offs.
