Shanghai's Night Buses and the City After Midnight

Shanghai's metro shuts down for the night, but the city does not. A set of dedicated night bus routes runs in the small hours, connecting the main rail stations, the commercial districts and the outer residential neighbourhoods, with departures spaced every twenty to forty minutes depending on the line. They are used by shift workers, restaurant and bar staff, delivery riders finishing late and people who have simply stayed out, and they are cheap, safe and almost empty of visitors.

What stays open
Alongside the buses, an entire night economy operates. Convenience stores run around the clock and are the city's default late-night kitchen, with hot snacks, drinks, phone chargers and places to sit. Twenty-four-hour restaurants specialise in congee, noodles and dumplings for people coming off shift, and a few long-running late-night food streets stay busy until three or four in the morning. Korean and Japanese barbecue, Sichuan hotpot and skewer shops keep late hours in the entertainment districts, and there is a layer of bathhouses and massage places that never close at all.

The small hours in the centre
The bar districts thin out between two and three in the morning, and what remains is mostly noodles and congee. The two big rail stations are genuinely busy all night, with travellers sleeping on benches and food stalls doing steady business. The Bund and the riverside promenades are calm and lit, and a walk along them at two in the morning, with the towers still illuminated, is one of the more memorable things to do in Shanghai and costs nothing at all.

Practical notes
Have the night bus number and the nearest stop written in Chinese before you set out, since drivers do not announce in English and the stops are easy to miss in the dark. Taxis and ride-hailing work all night and are inexpensive, though fares rise slightly after eleven; ride-hailing is the simplest option if you do not read Chinese. Streets are safe at all hours in the central districts, but there is little open in the outer suburbs, so plan the route home before you go out rather than after midnight.
