Overview

This is the food day for travellers who want the eating arranged along the water. It starts gently on Shamian Island - a sandbank in the Pearl River laid out as a British and French concession after 1859, car-free and shaded - and then moves into the old city for dim sum taken as lunch, the way the city takes it.

The afternoon is a market and a tea shop, which between them explain the cuisine better than any restaurant can: what freshness means in a subtropical port, and why the same leaf sells at wildly different prices. Dinner is the set piece, taken with the water in front of you - a soup, steamed fish, a roast, greens, rice - and outside where the weather allows.

Two meals are included and all beverages beyond the tea served with them are not. Tell us about dietary requirements when you enquire and we will build the menus around them.

  • Two or three teas tasted properly in a specialist shop
  • A Cantonese dinner with the river in front and the bridges lit across it
  • Why Cantonese cooking is built on steam, poach and short high heat rather than on spice

Itinerary

Day 1Eating Along the Pearl River: Shamian Island, the Teahouses and a River Dinner

Morning - the island
Shamian Island is a sandbank in the Pearl River laid out as a British and French concession after 1859: car-free, planted with banyans, and lined with arcaded colonial buildings that now hold cafes, bakeries and the kind of small restaurant that only survives when the rents are old. It is the gentlest place in Guangzhou to start a food day, and it gives you the river, the climate and the treaty-port century in one flat shaded walk before the eating begins in earnest.

Late morning - dim sum in the old city
From the island it is a short drive into the old commercial quarter for dim sum done as the city does it: har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, cheung fun, a pot of pu'er, and the etiquette that goes with the table - two fingers tapped in thanks for the pour, the pot lid left open when you want more. Your guide orders against the kitchen's strengths rather than against the menu's photographs, and explains why Cantonese cooking is built on steaming, poaching and short high-heat stir-frying rather than on spice.

Lunch
Dim sum, taken as lunch.

Afternoon - the market and the tea shop
The afternoon is a working market and a tea shop. The market supplies the argument: Cantonese food is coastal, subtropical and obsessive about freshness, and you can see all three in the tanks, trays and drying racks. The tea shop then deals with the other half of yum cha, which is the cha - two or three teas tasted properly, enough to understand why the same leaf is bought at wildly different prices and what the shopkeeper is listening for when you describe what you like.

Evening - dinner on the river
Dinner is the day's set piece, taken with the water in front of you and the bridges and towers lit across it. The order is deliberate and simple: a soup, steamed fish, a roast, greens, rice. Where the weather allows, the table is outside. On the way back your guide will point out what you are looking at across the river, so that the last thing you do in Guangzhou is understand its skyline.

Trip Notes

What this day is. A guided private food day following the river, with dim sum lunch and a Cantonese dinner included. The walking on Shamian is flat and easy; the rest of the day is short drives.

Practical notes. Evening river tables are in demand, so we confirm the venue once your date is fixed and tell you the substitute if it is not available. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged in advance. If the group would rather eat indoors whatever the weather, say so and we will book accordingly.

Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.

Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.

Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.

Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
