China's four biggest visitor cities run between three and eight mainline stations each, and a rail ticket is valid only at the station printed on it. Arrive at Shanghai Station holding a Hongqiao ticket and you are turned away at the gate, not rebooked on the spot. Pick the wrong one and the penalty is usually 40 minutes to an hour of metro. What follows is the station map for Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi'an as it stands in November 2026, plus the two checks that stop the mistake happening.
The station name is part of the ticket
Every Chinese ticket is station-specific. 12306 prints the departure in the 出发站 field, and the English interface spells it out as Beijing South, Beijing West or Shanghai Hongqiao, names that look interchangeable until you are standing in the wrong concourse. Two habits solve it. Read the station field rather than the city when you compare departures. Then screenshot the Chinese characters (北京南站, 上海虹桥站), because a taxi driver may not recognise the English.
Nothing on a Chinese rail ticket allows a same-day station change. The booking is tied to one station and one train, so a wrong station means buying again from whatever is left in the 15-day sales window. The booking steps themselves are in our passport booking guide.
Beijing: eight stations, and the routes barely overlap
| Station | Main routes | Metro | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beijing South 北京南 | Beijing-Shanghai HSR, Beijing-Tianjin intercity | 4, 14 | Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Jinan, Qingdao, Tianjin |
| Beijing West 北京西 | Beijing-Guangzhou HSR, Beijing-Xiongan intercity, Beijing-Kowloon | 7, 9 | Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Chengdu |
| Beijing Chaoyang 北京朝阳 | Beijing-Harbin HSR | 3 | Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun, Harbin, Changbaishan |
| Beijing North 北京北, Qinghe 清河 | Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR | 2, 4, 13 and 13 | Zhangjiakou, Chongli, Datong, Hohhot, Badaling |
| Beijing Fengtai 北京丰台 | Beijing-Guangzhou HSR plus conventional Beijing-Kowloon and Beijing-Shanghai trains | 10, 16 | The same corridors as West, with shorter queues |
| Beijing Station 北京站 | Conventional northeast and Shanghai lines, international trains | 2 | Moscow and Pyongyang services |
| Beijing Tongzhou 北京通州 | Beijing-Tangshan intercity, open since 30 December 2025 | 6 | Tangshan, Yanjiao, Baodi |
Choose by direction, not by distance. Everything east and southeast, from Shanghai to Qingdao, leaves from Beijing South, which handles no conventional trains at all. The Guangzhou corridor, which includes Xi'an and Chengdu, leaves from Beijing West or Fengtai. The northeast is Chaoyang, the northwest is Beijing North or Qinghe. For the Great Wall at Badaling, the Zhangjiakou line has its own Badaling station, and it is the fastest way to the wall.
Beijing's eight-station layout was completed when Tongzhou opened with the Beijing-Tangshan line. It reaches Tangshan in 55 minutes, quicker than Beijing Station.
Shanghai: Hongqiao by default, the old station for the centre
| Station | Main routes | Metro | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai Hongqiao 上海虹桥 | Almost all long-distance high-speed trains | 2, 10, 17 | Beijing in 4h18, Suzhou 23 minutes, Hangzhou 45 minutes |
| Shanghai Station 上海站 | Some high-speed trains, conventional services | 1, 3, 4 | Central hotels, short delta hops |
| Shanghai South 上海南 | Overnight EMU sleepers | 1, 3, 15 | D99 to Hong Kong, D21 Shenzhen, D169 Guangzhou |
| Shanghai West 上海西 | A handful of services | 11 | Rarely useful |
Hongqiao sits in the same complex as the domestic airport and links to Pudong by the Airport Link Line in roughly 45 minutes of train time, so it doubles as an airport transfer.
The January 2026 timetable is why Shanghai South now matters. The old Z99 to Hong Kong became the D99 overnight sleeper from South, and conventional sleepers to Shenzhen, Changsha, Hankou and Guangzhou Baiyun were upgraded to D-series the same way. Hongqiao gained three Hong Kong departures a day, including the G895 sleeper that leaves at 20:15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Beijing-Shanghai is now 48 pairs daily, the last big-stop service being G32 at 19:25 from Hongqiao.
Guangzhou: South is the national hub, East is the city station
| Station | Scale in the October 2026 timetable | Metro | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou South 广州南 | 528.5 pairs a day | 2, 7, 22 | Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guilin, Changsha |
| Guangzhou East 广州东 | 365 trains, 213 of them originating | 1, 3 | Shenzhen, Chaozhou, Shantou, Hangzhou, West Kowloon |
| Guangzhou Station 广州站 | 282 trains | 2, 5 | Conventional Jingguang services, new Zhanjiang cross-line trains |
| Guangzhou Baiyun 广州白云 | 284 trains, 80 conventional and 126 EMU departures | 8 | Overflow for conventional and southern high-speed trains |
Guangzhou South is in Panyu, about 20 km from the Canton Tower and 35 to 40 minutes by metro with one change. That is the price of a national hub. If the trip begins in Shenzhen or Hong Kong, Guangzhou East is the smarter arrival: it is on the edge of Tianhe and runs the Shenzhen and Shantou corridor as its main business, with West Kowloon trains as well.
Xi'an: a third station opened in June 2026
| Station | Position | Metro | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi'an North 西安北 | 12 km north of the centre, 18 platforms and 34 tracks | 2, 4, 14 | Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Zhengzhou |
| Xi'an Station 西安站 | Inside the city wall, 3 km from the Bell Tower | 4 | Conventional trains, short regional services |
| Xi'an East 西安东 | Baqiao district, open 30 June 2026, 13 platforms and 27 tracks | 5 | Wuhan, Shiyan, Chongqing, Yan'an, Ankang |
Xi'an East was the first large hub station to open in China's 2026 to 2030 planning period: 100,000 square metres of floor space, a five-minute walk to metro Line 5, and 110 pairs a day in its first summer.
The Xi'an-Shiyan line opened the same day: 257 km at 350 km/h, putting Wuhan 2 hours 41 minutes from Xi'an at best. That single change created the worst station mix-up in the country. Xi'an North to Xi'an East takes about 1 hour 11 minutes by metro, against 24 minutes by train on the connecting line, and the two are 20 km apart.
What the mistake actually costs
The transfer is the small part. Beijing South to Tiananmen is 7.9 km and about 35 minutes by metro with a change at Xidan; Guangzhou South to the Canton Tower is 20 km and 35 to 40 minutes. A wrong-station run inside one city rarely costs less than 40 minutes and can cost 70.
The expensive part is the ticket. Chinese rail has no station transfer endorsement, so a missed train is a refund and a new purchase, subject to what is left. With a 15-day sales window and a full morning departure, that is often the next day. Two situations are unforgiving: a 07:30 departure, where there is no slack to absorb a 40-minute detour, and a late arrival, when the metro has stopped and the taxi costs more than the ticket.
Check the arrival station as carefully as the departure
The same trap exists at the other end, and it is worse because you are tired. In Suzhou, Suzhou Station sits beside the old town and Pingjiang Road, while Suzhou North serves the Beijing and Nanjing high-speed corridor and is 14 km out. In Hangzhou, Hangzhou East is the high-speed hub but Hangzhou Station is the one near West Lake. Both cities have more than one station on the Shanghai line, and both appear in our city-hopping itineraries.
How to verify in two minutes
Before paying, open the train on 12306 and read four fields: departure station, arrival station, date and departure time. Then check that the departure station is the one nearest your hotel, not the one nearest the city name. If the trip is for work, the arrival station matters more than the departure, because the meeting is at the other end; our business travel notes cover that timing. And if you are building a day around a station, the station and boarding guide explains the passport lane, which is where the 40 minutes actually go.
FAQ
Can I board at a different station with the same ticket? No. The ticket names one station and one train. Staff will not admit you elsewhere, and there is no transfer endorsement. Buy a new ticket.
How do I know which Beijing station my train uses? Read 出发站 on 12306. As a rule: Shanghai and the east from Beijing South, Xi'an and the south from Beijing West or Fengtai, the northeast from Chaoyang, Zhangjiakou and Datong from Beijing North or Qinghe.
Which Shanghai station is closest to the Bund? Shanghai Station, on Line 1, is about two metro stops from People's Square. Hongqiao is 30 to 35 minutes out on Line 2, but it has by far the most departures, so most visitors still end up there.
Which Xi'an station is closest to the Bell Tower? Xi'an Station, about 3 km away and just outside the city wall. Xi'an North is 12 km north, and Xi'an East is 10 to 15 km east in Baqiao.
Do the stations have English signage? Yes, at all of these. Station names, platform numbers, exits and ticket machines are bilingual, and staff at information desks handle passports.
