China Tourist Trains in 2026-2027: How to Book, What They Cost and Who They Suit

Why Booking a Tourist Train Is Not Like Booking a Seat

China runs two separate booking systems for rail travel. A high-speed G or D service is a ticket: you choose a departure, pay, and sit in a reserved seat for a few hours. A tourist train is a packaged holiday. The carriage is your hotel room, the dining car is your restaurant, and the excursions, coach transfers, guides and insurance are folded into a single per-person price.

A tourist train appears in an ordinary departure search only when the operator has published it on the national platform. Three booking routes exist, at very different prices.

What a Tourist Train Programme Actually Costs

Fares are quoted per person for the whole programme, in Chinese yuan, and they move with season and cabin grade. The figures below are levels published by the operating companies and their authorised agents during 2026. Treat them as indicative: prices shift by departure date, and the signed contract governs.

Train Typical programme Entry cabin Top cabin
New Orient Express 11 to 15 days, Xinjiang Boyue Gold Diamond from about 27,888 CNY Zungui Gold Diamond above 71,999 CNY
Hulunbuir Express 6 days and 5 nights, Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang Golden cabin from about 22,000 CNY Supreme Purple Gold cabin
Silk Road Dream 5 days to 16 days, Qinghai, Gansu and Xinjiang Standard double from 45,999 CNY Flagship suite about 199,999 CNY per suite
Chengdu Panda Train, Shifang 16 days, Sichuan into Xinjiang Superior Platinum upper berth 8,480 CNY Premium Purple Gold lower berth 28,880 CNY
Lindoo, Heilongjiang winter 9 days, Harbin and the Greater Khingan Range Gold Diamond from 29,999 CNY Luxury suite 59,999 CNY

The gap between the cheapest and dearest cabin on one departure is often three to five times, so the cabin you pick drives the price far more than the route. Shoulder-season dates also cost dramatically less: the October southern Xinjiang run of the New Orient Express is priced at roughly two thirds of the August peak.

The Three Ways to Book

The national platform sells tourist trains directly. In the 12306 app or website, open the Rail Tourism section and choose the tourist train entry. You can read the product description, check departures, see remaining berths and pay in one flow. Railway travel counters sell the same products in person. Tourist trains are dynamically scheduled, so the running information on 12306 is authoritative at any given moment.

Groups have their own channel. One booking on 12306 can cover up to 19 tickets, one account can hold up to 30 travellers, and parties of 20 or more on the same date and service can call the 12306 service centre three or more days ahead. Student fares apply on tourist trains in the summer season, including first class and sleeper berths.

The largest products are not sold as tickets at all. The New Orient Express, the Hulunbuir Express, the Silk Road Dream and the Panda Train are chartered trains sold as all-inclusive packages through the operating railway tourism company and its authorised agencies. A deposit holds the berth and the balance falls due a few weeks before departure. The Panda Train, Shifang publishes about 8,480 CNY for an upper berth in the entry cabin of its 16-day programme and has no standalone ticket on 12306.

What a Deposit Commits You To

Charter trains lock carriages, hotel rooms and site access months ahead, so cancellation terms are strict. Published terms for the Silk Road Dream are typical: a deposit of 20,000 CNY per person in a standard room or 30,000 CNY in a suite, credited in full against the final invoice. A name change is free more than three days out. A date change more than 45 days ahead moves the deposit to another departure for a 3,000 CNY per-room fee; inside 45 days only 70 per cent is retained. Cancellation charges then step up sharply: at 31 days or more the deposit is lost, at 21 to 30 days add 30 per cent of the programme price, at 8 to 20 days add 50 per cent, and inside seven days the full price is forfeited. The New Orient Express applies the same logic.

Tourist Train, Normal High-Speed Service or Custom Tour

A tourist train suits a long, multi-city route where distance is the problem: Xinjiang, the northeast, the Silk Road corridor. You sleep while the train moves, unpack once, and wake up at the next site. It is strong for older travellers, for families travelling with grandparents, and for anyone tired of repacking every second morning. The trade-offs are a fixed departure date, a fixed itinerary and a group rhythm.

An ordinary high-speed service wins almost everywhere else. It runs daily, tickets open 15 days ahead, and on most trunk routes you can decide your plan the week you travel. For city pairs under four or five hours, a G or D train plus a hotel is cheaper and far more flexible than any packaged train.

A custom private tour is the third option, and the right one when your group wants sites the packaged trains skip, or when you travel as an incentive or corporate group. Cost scales with group size rather than with the cabin, so the arithmetic changes completely above about eight travellers. Our leisure tour team builds these itineraries, our student travel desk handles school and university groups, and our corporate visits team runs incentive programmes.

Passport, Payment and Boarding Notes

Foreign passports work here, with one extra step: the 12306 English interface accepts a passport, but passport holders must pass identity verification through 12306 or a station window before a first booking. After that you can pay with an international or domestic bank card, or a mobile payment app linked to a foreign card. At the station, travel with the same document you booked with and use the manual inspection channel rather than the automated gates. Meals, shore-day transport and insurance sit inside the package; personal spending, drinks outside the set menu, optional activities and gratuities do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a tourist train on 12306 with a foreign passport?

Yes, for products published in the Rail Tourism section, once your passport has passed verification. Chartered trains such as the New Orient Express are not listed there and must be booked as a package through the operator or an authorised agency.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is usually enough for scheduled tourist trains on 12306. For chartered trains, three to six months. Lindoo's Spring Festival departure and the August peak of the New Orient Express sell out earliest.

Is a tourist train good value compared with a custom tour?

For two to four travellers on a fixed schedule, a tourist train usually covers a long route more cheaply, because hotels, meals and excursions are included. For six or more travellers with specific interests, a custom itinerary often costs the same or less and gives you full control.
