Taibai Mountain

Taibai Mountain stands in the Qinling range about 120 kilometres west of Xi'an, on the border between Mei and Taibai counties. At 3,767 metres it is the highest peak in the Qinling, the mountain chain that separates the dry north China plain from the wetter south, and it has been a place of religious retreat and hard walking for well over a thousand years.

Why it matters
The Qinling is a genuine ecological boundary, and Taibai shows it. The mountain carries vegetation zones stacked one above another: broadleaf forest, mixed forest, birch and fir, alpine scrub and finally bare rock and snow. Because of that range, Taibai supports species found nowhere else, including the giant panda's northernmost populations in the wider Qinling and the golden snub-nosed monkey. The Taoist tradition treated the peak as sacred, and there are old temples and hermitages on the slopes.

Getting up the mountain
The park has a lower section reached by shuttle bus and a cable car that lifts visitors a long way up towards the upper ridge. Above the cable car, a boardwalk and stone path continue to the summit area, a further two to three hours of steep climbing at altitude. Many visitors stop at the alpine meadow and the High Mountain Lake, known as Daye Hai, which is the sensible option for a day trip. Overnight huts and campsites exist higher up for those attempting the summit at sunrise.

What to expect
Temperatures drop sharply with height, and the summit is cold and windy even in midsummer, sometimes with snow. Weather changes fast and cloud can swallow the ridge without warning, so waterproofs and layers are essential. Altitude is a real factor for people arriving straight from sea level. The lower slopes are a pleasant forest walk with wooden steps, streams and wildflowers in late spring, followed by a long staircase that many visitors find harder than expected.

Practical notes
Taibai is usually done from Xi'an by car or organised tour, taking about two hours each way, and the straightforward version is a very long day. Staying overnight in the hot spring town of Tangyu at the foot of the mountain is a much better arrangement, since the area has natural hot springs and simple guesthouses. Park entry, the shuttle and the cable car are charged separately, and the upper trails close in winter.
