Overview

This is the day tour to take if you have one day in Xi'an and want the two things the city is famous for without spending it in a bus. You leave before the tour groups, reach the Terracotta Army pits at opening, continue to Huaqing Palace below Mount Li, and come back into the city for the Ming wall in the late afternoon light. Private vehicle throughout, English-speaking guide throughout, and no shopping stops. It works as a stand-alone day or as the core of a longer itinerary.

Highlights

  • Enter the Terracotta Army at opening and work the three pits with a guide who can explain the excavation rather than recite dates.
  • See Pit 1, the largest, where more than 6,000 figures have been reassembled in rows since the site was discovered in 1974.
  • Continue to Huaqing Palace, the Tang imperial hot spring at the foot of Mount Li, where the bathing pools are still visible.
  • Return to the city and walk a section of the Ming wall at Yongning Gate, with the option to cycle the full 13.7 km loop.
  • Finish with a late lunch of Shaanxi noodles or a dumpling banquet, arranged to your taste and any allergies.
  • Door-to-door transfers from any Xi'an hotel, with luggage carried in the vehicle if you are heading for the airport afterwards.

Itinerary

Day 1Xi'an: the Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace and the City Wall

Morning — The Terracotta Warriors Museum
Enter Pit 1, the largest discovered ancient military formation in the world: six thousand life-sized soldiers, each with distinct features, standing in their original order. Visit Huaqing Palace afterwards, the imperial hot-spring retreat where Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei bathed beneath the plum blossom.

Afternoon — Return to the City
Transfer back to Xi'an and take the rest of the afternoon at an easy pace.

Evening — The Ancient City Wall
Stroll the 14-kilometre Ming rampart, the most complete city fortification surviving in China. From the top you read the whole city at once — the grid of the old town, the gates, the tiled roofs, and the modern towers beyond the moat.

Trip Notes

Frequently asked questions

How long is the day?

About nine hours, from a 7:30 hotel pickup to a 16:30 return. The drive to Lintong is roughly an hour each way on the expressway.

Can we skip Huaqing Palace?

Yes. Some travelers prefer a second hour at the warriors instead, and we would rather you did that than walk a site you do not care about. Say so at booking and the day is rebalanced.

Is this suitable with children?

Yes, though it is a long day for under-eights. Our family version swaps Huaqing for an archaeology workshop and shortens the wall segment.

What is not included?

Lunch is included as listed; dinner, drinks and gratuities are not. Tickets to the named sites, the shuttle bus at the Terracotta Army and the city wall entry are all included.
