Overview

This is the Xi'an itinerary we recommend to travelers who have four clear days and want depth rather than coverage. It pairs the two headline sites, the Terracotta Army and the Ming city wall, with three quieter ones most tours skip: the Stele Forest, the Xi'an Museum and the Great Mosque on Huajue Lane. Evenings are deliberately free or light, with the Grand Tang Mall on arrival night and the Sajinqiao food street after the warriors. Everything runs private, with your own vehicle and guide, and the pace adjusts to how long you actually want to stand in front of a pit.

Highlights

  • Arrive and walk the Grand Tang Mall after dark, a pedestrian avenue built on the Tang city's central axis and busy until late.
  • Spend a full morning at the Terracotta Army's three pits and a slow afternoon at Huaqing Palace, the Tang imperial hot spring below Mount Li.
  • Eat your way through the Sajinqiao night market, where Xi'an families actually eat, rather than the tourist strip at Beiyuanmen.
  • Walk the Ming city wall from the South Gate, 13.7 km around the old city and wide enough for four people abreast.
  • Read the Stele Forest's 1,000-plus stone tablets, the canon of Chinese calligraphy, with a guide who can translate the scripts.
  • Visit the Great Mosque on Huajue Lane, founded in 742 and built as a Chinese courtyard complex with an Islamic function.
  • Take a Tang-style tea ceremony after the Xi'an Museum, then finish with a free morning and a farewell lunch before departure.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Xi'an · Encounter the Splendors of the Tang Dynasty

Morning/Afternoon — Arrival & Hotel Check-in
A tour bus transfers you from the airport or railway station, and you check into your hotel in the Qujiang or High-tech District. These areas sit close to the city's cultural tourism hubs, with recommended options near Da Tang Pedestrian Street. Your guide will assist with check-in and brief you on the days ahead.

Afternoon — Lunch & Free Time
Lunch is served at your hotel, followed by free time to explore the hotel surroundings. You may stroll in the nearby Qujiang Pool Ruins Park or familiarize yourself with the area around Da Tang Eternal City.

Evening — Da Tang Eternal City (17:30–20:00)
Take an evening stroll along Da Tang Eternal City, a 2.1-kilometer pedestrian boulevard themed around the prosperity of the Tang dynasty and lined with elaborate light installations, sculptures, and street performances. You can experience immersive Tang Dynasty performances such as 'Secret Box of the Great Tang' and 'Unmovable Beauty', and optionally rent Tang Dynasty costumes for photos. The 'Chang'an 12 Hours' themed block is also nearby.

Dinner is arranged at a local restaurant to close the day.

Day 2Xi'an: the Terracotta Army, Huaqing Palace and Sajinqiao Night Market

Morning — The Terracotta Warriors
This is not a history lesson, it is a confrontation. Standing at the edge of Pit No. 1 looking out over thousands of clay soldiers, the scale of what one emperor ordered into production is hard to take in. Your guide covers the three pits and the Bronze Chariot hall.

Afternoon — Huaqing Palace
Continue to Huaqing Palace, where the most famous love story in Chinese history played out around natural hot springs, and where the drama of empire and the drama of a single consort are inseparable.

Evening — Sajinqiao Night Market
Dinner at the Sajinqiao night market, a working-class neighbourhood where motorbikes weave between food carts and grandmothers argue cheerfully with vendors over the price of skewers.

Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Transport: Hotel - Lintong - Huaqing - Sajinqiao - hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3Xi'an: the Ming City Wall, the Stele Forest and the Great Mosque

Morning — The Ming City Wall
Walk the ramparts of the Ming city wall, the most complete ancient defensive structure in China. It runs 13.7 kilometres around the old centre; taken at an unhurried pace it is a slow read of the city, past the gates and watchtowers, with the streets laid out twelve metres below.

Afternoon — The Stele Forest
Enter the Stele Forest, a sanctuary of more than two thousand stone inscriptions spanning the Han dynasty to the Qing and the greatest repository of Chinese calligraphy anywhere. The texts were carved in order to be copied, so walking the courtyards is the quickest way to see how the script itself changed.

Evening — The Great Mosque and the Muslim Quarter
Finish on Huajue Lane at the Great Mosque, founded in the Tang dynasty and one of the largest and best preserved in China, where Arabic script and Chinese timber architecture stand side by side in the same courtyards. The lanes around it are the Muslim Quarter, and dinner is here.

Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Transport: Hotel - City Wall - Stele Forest - Huajue Lane - hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4Xi'an: the Xi'an Museum, the Two Pagodas and a Tang Tea Ceremony

Morning — Xi'an Museum and the Small Wild Goose Pagoda
Trace thirteen dynasties at the Xi'an Museum, then climb the grounds of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, built in the Tang to house the scriptures Xuanzang brought back from India.

Afternoon — The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and a Tang Tea Ceremony
Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, where the monk Xuanzang translated the scriptures he carried from India. Continue into the Tang Dynasty Lotus Garden for a tea ceremony in the Tang manner — the tea is boiled, not steeped — led by a scholar who places it in the context of Chang'an and the Silk Road.

Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Transport: Hotel - Xi'an Museum - Giant Wild Goose Pagoda - Tang Lotus Garden - hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5Xi'an: a Free Morning, a Farewell Lunch and Departure

Morning — Free
The pace of the programme is deliberately broken on the last morning. Families who want one more circuit of the wall can walk or cycle a section of it from the nearest gate; those who would rather shop will find the mosque quarter a short walk from most central hotels and still busy in the morning. Nothing is scheduled, so the group can sleep in after the evening food streets.

Lunch — Farewell Lunch
A farewell lunch in the city centre, with time afterwards to finish packing and settle the room.

Afternoon — Departure
Your guide transfers the group to Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) for the flight home, or to Xi'an North Railway Station for the high-speed service to Beijing, Zhengzhou or Chengdu, assisting with luggage and check-in. Families extending the trip can continue to Chengdu or Shanghai on the same rail network, and your guide will confirm the platform and seat allocations before departure.

Meals
Breakfast, Lunch included.

Transport: Xi'an hotel - (free morning inside the wall) - farewell lunch venue - Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) or Xi'an North Railway Station

Trip Notes

Frequently asked questions

How does this differ from your other Xi'an routes?

It is the deepest five-day version: two full site days, two quieter museum and mosque days, and no long transfers. Shorter routes cover the warriors and the wall; this one adds the Stele Forest, the Xi'an Museum and the Great Mosque, which is where Xi'an stops being a checklist.

Can we add Mount Hua?

Yes, as a sixth day. It is a 120 km drive each way plus cable car, and it is a full day with real walking. We would drop the Xi'an Museum day rather than compress anything else.

Is the Terracotta Army crowded?

It is one of the busiest sites in China, and the difference between a good and a bad visit is timing. We enter at opening, work the pits in reverse order to the tour buses, and give Pit 1 the time it deserves last.

What standard of hotel is quoted?

Four-star international brand in the city center, twin share with breakfast, within walking distance of the South Gate. Five-star and courtyard boutique options are quoted on request.
