Overview

Xianyang airport is about 40 kilometres northwest of the city, roughly 50 minutes by expressway. With six hours between flights, that leaves about three hours in the city once you allow for immigration, the drive and the return - enough for the old city centre at a walk, not enough for the Terracotta Army, which is in the opposite direction and needs four hours on its own. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a rushed, unpleasant day.

The plan is built around the clock of your connection. In the morning: the City Wall rampart at opening, then breakfast. In the afternoon: the towers and the lanes. At night: the floodlit towers and the moat, which is the best version of this city in any case. Nationals of 57 countries can use China's 240-hour visa-free transit at 65 designated ports, Xianyang among them, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country; if your passport does not qualify, we will tell you before you book rather than at the airport.

Itinerary

Day 1The Airport Transit Express

Xianyang airport is about 40 kilometres northwest of the city, roughly 50 minutes by expressway. With six hours between flights, that leaves about three hours in the city once you allow for immigration, the drive and the return - enough for the old city centre at a walk, not enough for the Terracotta Army, which is in the opposite direction and needs four hours on its own.

The plan is built around the clock of your connection: Bell Tower and Drum Tower square, a walk down Beiyuanmen, a bowl of biangbiang noodles or paomo at a shop your guide trusts, and back. If your layover is at night, the towers and the lit wall are the whole point; if it is in the morning, we swap in the City Wall rampart and a breakfast stop.

Nationals of 57 countries can use China's 240-hour visa-free transit at 65 designated ports, Xianyang among them, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country. If your passport does not qualify, we will tell you before you book rather than at the airport.

Trip Notes

Published: October 2026 — prices and itinerary reviewed on this date; later updates are shown in the revision note below.

Please read the notes below before you book. Send us your flight numbers before we confirm: the whole plan depends on the actual connection time, not the scheduled one.

Q: How much time do I actually need for this?
A: Six hours between flights is the minimum for a comfortable version, and seven is better. Immigration and baggage can take an hour on a bad day, the drive is 50 minutes each way, and you want to be back two hours before departure. That leaves three hours in the city. With five hours, we do the Bell Tower and a bowl of noodles and nothing else.

Q: Can I leave the airport without a visa?
A: If your nationality is on China's 240-hour visa-free transit list - 57 countries at 65 designated ports, Xianyang included - yes, provided you hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and enter and exit through a designated port. If you already hold a visa, none of this applies. We check your nationality before booking.

Q: Is the Terracotta Army possible on a layover?
A: Not properly. It is 40 kilometres east of the city, in the opposite direction from the airport, and the site needs three hours on its own. A six-hour window would give you about seventy minutes in the pits with no margin for traffic. We would rather say no than sell you a sprint.

Q: What happens if my flight is delayed?
A: Tell us as soon as you know and we re-plan the window rather than cancel it. If the delay makes the city impossible, we refund the unused portion - the vehicle and guide are the main cost and both are movable. We monitor arrival times when you give us the flight number, so usually we know before you land.

Q: Where do we store luggage?
A: At the airport, in the left-luggage office in the arrivals hall, about CNY 30-50 per bag for the day. Bringing bags into the city wastes an hour of your window. If you are connecting on the same ticket, the airline will usually through-check them and you carry nothing.

Q: Is this worth doing at all, or should I just stay in the airport?
A: For a first-time visitor to China, yes - the Bell Tower square at night is a genuine experience and the noodles are worth the trip. For someone who has been to Xi'an before, probably not. Be honest with yourself about how you feel after a long flight; a lounge and a shower is also a valid choice.

Q: Do I need a visa for this?
A: That depends on your nationality and on the transit rules, which is why we check it before booking. China's unilateral visa-free scheme covers 50 countries for stays up to 30 days; 240-hour visa-free transit covers 57 nationalities through 65 ports. Verify against the National Immigration Administration list, because both schemes are revised periodically.
