Overview

Luoyang was the capital of thirteen dynasties and the place where Buddhism entered China, and its archaeology is unusually readable. The Longmen Grottoes run for a kilometre along the Yi River and carry some of the most precisely dated Buddhist sculpture in the country; the White Horse Temple records the arrival of the first monks from India; and the Songshan range nearby holds the monasteries that made Chan Buddhism Chinese.

This five-day programme is written for students of archaeology, history and religion. Each site comes with a question sheet and a short site briefing, and the closing half day at the Luoyang plants — the tractor works and the bearing group, both built in the First Five-Year Plan — asks students to compare how a heritage site and an industrial site present themselves to visitors.

Highlights

  • The Longmen Grottoes, inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2000, with 2,345 niches and more than 100,000 Buddhist figures in the limestone of the Yi River gorge

  • The dated inscriptions at Longmen, which let students work out for themselves how the carving changed across four centuries
