Overview

Lanzhou is the only provincial capital in China that the Yellow River runs through, and this two-day private tour takes it as the subject rather than a stopover. The first day is the city waterfront - the Zhongshan Bridge of 1909, the river mother sculpture, the waterwheel park and the provincial museum with its flying horse - and White Pagoda Mountain above the river. The second day goes out to the Liujiaxia reservoir and crosses it by boat to the Bingling Temple, a grotto site begun in the fourth century whose earliest dated inscription is from 420 AD, and which was inscribed with the Silk Roads World Heritage listing in 2014.

Highlights

  • The Zhongshan Bridge, the first permanent bridge across the Yellow River at Lanzhou
  • The Yellow River Mother sculpture and the Ming-dynasty waterwheel park
  • The Gansu Provincial Museum, home of the Bronze Flying Horse of Wuwei
  • White Pagoda Mountain, looking down on the river and the city
  • A boat across the Liujiaxia reservoir to the Bingling Temple grottoes
  • The 169th cave, with China's earliest dated inscription, from 420 AD

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival & Lanzhou City Highlights

Arrival — Welcome to Lanzhou
Arrive in Lanzhou, the Golden City straddling the Yellow River, where your guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your downtown hotel, passing the iconic Zhongshan Iron Bridge and riverside waterwheels. Your guide assists with check-in, and you can savor a bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles — hand-pulled noodles in clear broth with chili oil — at a local eatery.

Afternoon — Gansu Provincial Museum
Explore the Gansu Provincial Museum, whose collection of some 350,000 artifacts spans Silk Road history. Highlights include the Flying Horse of Gansu, a 2nd-century bronze, Tibetan Buddhist thangkas, and Han Dynasty bamboo slips. The Silk Road Gallery recreates Dunhuang trade routes with interactive caravan dioramas.

Evening — Yellow River Mother Sculpture and Baita Mountain
Stroll the riverbank to see the Mother of the Yellow River, a granite statue symbolizing the river's nurturing power. Take a cable car up Baita Mountain for sunset views of the city and its illuminated bridges, then enjoy a dinner of Shou Zhua Yangrou (hand-grabbed lamb) with cumin and garlic.

Day 2Liujiaxia Reservoir & Bingling Temple Grottoes

Morning — Liujiaxia Reservoir
Drive about 80 km (1.5 hours) to this massive hydroelectric dam on the Yellow River. Cruise the turquoise waters, flanked by red sandstone cliffs that resemble folded silk, and watch for migratory birds such as black-necked cranes. Nearby, explore the Danxia Landform Park, where erosion has sculpted rainbow-hued ridges and pillar formations.

Afternoon — Bingling Temple Grottoes
Accessible by boat from the reservoir and listed on China's UNESCO tentative list, these caves blend Tibetan and Han Buddhist art. Marvel at the 27-meter Maitreya Buddha, carved into a cliff during the Tang Dynasty, and the hundreds of niches and statues cut into the rock. Faded murals depict Avalokitesvara and Silk Road caravans, preserved by the arid climate.

Evening — Return to Lanzhou
Return to the city and dine at Mingde House on Liangpi (cold rice noodles with chili sauce) and Sanpao Tai (steamed pork buns). For an optional evening walk, visit the Zhengning Road Night Market for rose-petal pastries and apricot kernel tea.

Trip Notes

Please read the notes below before you book. Gansu is a long, thin province and the driving days between towns are long - three to five hours on the corridor, more on the mountain roads. Spring brings dust and wind; the best months are May to October, when the Danxia hills and the Zhangye grasslands are at their clearest and the desert sites are workable in the middle of the day. Mornings in the Hexi Corridor are cold even in summer.
