Overview

Most layover products are daylight programmes, which means anyone landing in the afternoon sees Shanghai at its flattest. This one is built round a night in a hotel: an early evening transfer, the Bund after dark, a cruise on the Huangpu, and dinner before you turn in.

The Bund is a mile of riverside promenade whose western frontage carries 52 historic buildings in seventeen varieties of European classical style, listed as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1996. In the evening the whole row is lit and faces the towers of Lujiazui across the water. Your guide walks the row and explains what each building was for, so that the lighting does not hide the history.

The cruise and the meal are payable locally and are not included in the price shown; the hotel night is not included either, though we are glad to book one. This is the version to choose if your onward flight leaves early the following morning.

Highlights

  • The Bund floodlit after dark, with the Lujiazui towers facing it across the river
  • 52 historic buildings on Zhongshan East No. 1 Road, read in order of date by your guide
  • A Huangpu River cruise putting both banks in one frame
  • Dinner ashore, Shanghainese or Cantonese as the group prefers
  • No early start and no clock to beat - built for a night between flights

Itinerary

Day 1Shanghai Overnight Stopover: the Bund at Night and a River Cruise

How this differs from a day layover
Most layover products are daylight programmes, which means that anyone who lands in the afternoon sees Shanghai at its flatest. This one is built for a night in a hotel near the airport or in the city: an early evening transfer, the Bund after dark, a cruise on the Huangpu, and dinner before you turn in. Nothing here needs to be done before a clock runs out, which is the whole point. We collect you from the airport or your hotel, drive in, and return you when you are ready. Timings are built around your onward flight the following day.

The Bund after dark
The Bund is a mile of riverside promenade on the west bank, and its western frontage is the densest run of historic commercial architecture in China: 52 buildings on Zhongshan East No. 1 Road in seventeen varieties of European classical style, together with those behind them more than 120 in all, listed by the State Council as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in November 1996. In the evening the whole row is floodlit and the towers of Lujiazui face it across the water, which is why this is the one Shanghai view nobody forgets. Your guide walks the row with you and explains what each building was for - the bank, the customs house, the club, the hotel - so that the lighting does not hide the history.

A Huangpu River cruise
A boat on the river puts the two banks in one frame and is the only way to see the Bund's frontage from the water it was built to face. The crossing takes in both the classical west bank and the modern east; cruises run most evenings and the class of boat and the sailing time are confirmed with your quotation. The cruise is payable locally and is not included in the price shown.

Dinner
Dinner ashore, either Shanghainese or Cantonese depending on what the group wants. We book it and you order from the menu; the cost of the meal is settled on the day.

Excludes

Entrance tickets for the sites visited on this day are not included in the price shown and are payable locally. Shanghai is unusually cheap to visit at this level: the Bund, the Xintiandi and Tianzifang lanes, Sinan Mansions and the Suzhou Creek bridge walk are all open to the public free of charge, and the ticketed gardens and temples on these routes cost well under CNY 100 per person. Your guide handles purchase at each gate, and the exact amount is confirmed in your final quotation and added to your invoice at cost. Shanghai is one of the ports covered by China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy, introduced on 17 December 2024, and the city also runs its own visa-free transit arrangements for eligible nationalities at both Pudong and Hongqiao airports. Eligibility depends on your nationality, on holding a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, and on the port of entry; the permitted stay runs from 00:00 on the day after arrival, and the area in which you may travel is set out in the current National Immigration Administration notice. Send us your passport details and flight numbers with your enquiry and we will confirm eligibility before you book.

Trip Notes

How this stopover works. Send us your flight numbers and the hotel you are using and we will build the evening around your arrival and departure. There is no fixed start time and nothing needs to be done before a clock runs out.

Practical notes. The promenade is flat and uncovered, so an umbrella matters in the wet season and the wind off the river is cold from November. Cruise sailings run most evenings but schedules change with the season; we confirm the sailing with your quotation. Dinner can be arranged either before or after the cruise.

Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.

Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.

Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.

Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
