The former French concession is the most walkable part of Shanghai and also the part where people eat best, because the lanes are full of small kitchens. This day stays inside it on foot and moves by appetite rather than by sight.
Tianzifang is a block of 1930s lane houses and former factory workshops off Taikang Road, converted from the ground up into studios, shops and small restaurants, and still partly residential, which is exactly what makes it a good food walk. The afternoon moves into the Sinan Mansions area - fifty-one garden villas of the 1920s, covering eight of the ten types of historic residential building Shanghai produced, thirty-nine of them protected - which is now the quietest place in central Shanghai to drink coffee.
Lunch and dinner are payable locally and are not included in the price shown; we book the dinner table and the group orders from the menu with the guide.
The shape of the day
The former French concession is the most walkable part of Shanghai and also the part where people eat best, because the lanes are full of small kitchens. This day stays inside it on foot and moves by appetite rather than by sight: breakfast pastries and coffee in the morning, grazing through the Tianzifang lanes at midday, tea and cake in the afternoon, and a proper Shanghainese dinner at the end.
We keep the car nearby for anyone who wants to sit out a stretch, and pick the group up from their hotel.
Tianzifang
Tianzifang is a block of 1930s lane houses and former factory workshops off Taikang Road, converted from the ground up into studios, shops and small restaurants. It is chaotic, narrow and still partly residential, which is precisely what makes it a good food walk: dumpling counters, Yunnan noodle shops, bakeries, a cheese shop, several very good coffee bars. Your guide leads with a list and a budget, and the group eats standing or on stools as the lanes do. Lunch is payable locally and is not included in the price shown.
Sinan Mansions and the plane-tree streets
The walk continues into the Sinan Mansions area on Fuxing Middle Road - fifty-one garden villas of the 1920s covering eight of the ten types of historic residential building Shanghai built, of which thirty-nine are protected as outstanding historic architecture. The Communist Party's wartime representative office in the city, known as the Zhou residence, stood in these gardens; Sun Yat-sen's former house is next door, and Liu Yazi and Mei Lanfang both lived here. The conservation project began at the end of 1999 and opened to the public in 2010. It is now the quietest place in central Shanghai to drink coffee, which is exactly why it is on a food day.
Dinner
Dinner is a sit-down Shanghainese meal - braised pork belly, drunken chicken, seasonal greens, a whole fish if the market has one worth having. We book it; you order from the menu with the guide, and the cost is settled on the day.

What this day is. A guided walk with food stops chosen on the day, not a fixed set of reservations. The Tianzifang lanes are narrow, uneven in places and busy at weekends; the Sinan Mansions section is level and quiet. Total walking is around five kilometres spread over the day.
Practical notes. Tell us at enquiry about allergies, about anything the group will not eat, and about whether you want the evening built around a specific cuisine. Vegetarian and no-pork groups are easy to accommodate here; the district has more choice than any other part of the city.
Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.
Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.
Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.
Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
