A one-day theme that covers Shanghai's classic landmarks and its everyday food in the same itinerary: the Bund, Nanjing Road, Yu Garden and the Pudong skyline, with a guided snack tasting in between. A good first day for travellers who want the city in one sweep before deciding where to spend more time.
Morning — The Bund
Begin at the Bund, Shanghai's landmark waterfront, and stroll the 1.5-kilometer promenade past 52 classical colonial buildings in Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance styles. Photo-stop at the Waibaidu Bridge, the 'First Bridge in the East,' which has witnessed Shanghai's changes for over a century.
Afternoon — Yu Garden & City God Temple
Head to Yu Garden and the City God Temple, a hub of traditional Shanghainese culture. Yu Garden, built in the Ming dynasty (started 1559), is a classic Jiangnan garden of exquisite pavilions, ponds, and rockeries. Wander the bazaar browsing handicrafts and tasting snacks such as xiaolongbao, shengjian mantou, and osmanthus cake.
Evening — Pudong Skyline & Dinner
Take a short ferry across the Huangpu River to Pudong to view Lujiazui's three iconic skyscrapers — the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Jin Mao Tower — aglow at night. Afterward, dine nearby on Shanghainese dishes such as braised pork and stir-fried eel, closing a memorable first day.
