Transit passengers from 57 nationalities can enter China visa-free for up to 240 hours, and Shanghai's airports and cruise terminals are approved ports, which turns a long layover into a usable visit. If your window is longer, the same structure extends to Suzhou or Hangzhou by high-speed rail.
