Overview

Both of this day's subjects sit in Jing'an and both reward the same habit: looking carefully at objects rather than reading labels. The Natural History Museum occupies a building in Jing'an Sculpture Park, opened in 2015, with 45,257 square metres of floor area and collections of more than 280,000 objects, and it is one of the largest museums of its kind in Asia.

The Jade Buddha Temple exists because of a journey: in 1882 a monk from Mount Putuo travelled to Burma, commissioned five jade Buddhas, and arrived back through Shanghai with two of them. The seated figure is 1.95 metres high and was carved from a single block of jade, and the temple that houses it has been listed among the national key Buddhist temples of the Han region since 1983.

Admission to the museum is included in the price shown; the temple charge and lunch are payable locally. This is a programme for school groups and for adults, and either collection can be taken first depending on how busy the galleries are.

Itinerary

Day 1Shanghai Study Day: the Natural History Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple

Why these two together
Both of the day's subjects sit in the same district and both reward the same habit: looking carefully at objects rather than reading labels. We start with the natural world and end with one of the city's working religious houses, which is a sequence that suits students and adults alike. The vehicle stays with the group all day and the programme is built to be re-ordered - either collection can be taken first, depending on opening hours and how busy the galleries are.

The Shanghai Natural History Museum
The museum occupies a building in Jing'an Sculpture Park whose structure is derived from the shell of a spiral, which is why it is known locally as the green snail. It was approved as a project in 2007, broke ground in June 2009 and opened to the public in the second quarter of 2015, and it is one of the largest museums of its kind in Asia at 45,257 square metres of floor area. Its collections run to more than 280,000 objects, of which about 11,000 specimens and models are on permanent display - over a thousand of those rare or protected species. The permanent galleries are organised on three lines: the movement of evolution, the scroll of life, and the epic of civilisation, and they cover ten named exhibition areas including the mysteries of origin, the river of life, the path of evolution, and the story of Shanghai. The single object every visitor remembers is the 26-metre blue whale suspended over the central hall. Admission is ticketed and is included in the price shown.

Lunch
A local lunch in Jing'an.

The Jade Buddha Temple
The Jade Buddha Temple exists because of a journey. In 1882, the eighth year of the Guangxu reign, a monk named Hui Gen set out from Mount Putuo, travelled to Mount Wutai on pilgrimage, and then went on to Burma, where he commissioned five jade Buddhas to be carved. Passing back through Shanghai he was left with two of them - a seated figure and a reclining one - and a temple was built to house them, in the Song architectural manner. The seated Buddha is 1.95 metres high and was carved from a single block of jade. The temple occupies about 11.6 mu with 8,856 square metres of building, arranged around three principal halls - the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Great Hall and the Jade Buddha Tower - with more than two hundred rooms besides. In 1983 the State Council listed it among the national key Buddhist temples of the Han region, and it remains a working monastery with resident monks rather than a museum. Dress and conduct expectations apply, and the guide will explain them before you go in.

Excludes

Entrance tickets for the sites visited on this day are not included in the price shown and are payable locally. Shanghai is unusually cheap to visit at this level: the Bund, the Xintiandi and Tianzifang lanes, Sinan Mansions and the Suzhou Creek bridge walk are all open to the public free of charge, and the ticketed gardens and temples on these routes cost well under CNY 100 per person. Your guide handles purchase at each gate, and the exact amount is confirmed in your final quotation and added to your invoice at cost. Any lecture, guided commentary session or workshop described here is arranged on request only and is subject to the host institution's confirmation of availability, minimum numbers and any charge they set. Nothing of that kind is guaranteed by this programme, and no such charge is included in the price shown.

Trip Notes

What this day is. A private guided study programme built on two collections, with the guide's commentary pitched to the age and interest of the group. Tell us at enquiry whether you want the science or the history emphasised and we will weight the time accordingly.

Practical notes. The natural history museum gives school groups timed entry and requires booking ahead; weekend mornings are the busiest and we avoid them where we can. The temple is a working religious house: shoulders and knees covered, hats off inside the halls, and no photography of the monks. The seated Buddha is not photographed.

Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.

Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.

Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.

Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
