Twelve of us, three generations of one family, and a route that could have been a logistics nightmare: Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai with the high-speed train in the middle. LinkedTours took the whole thing off our hands and kept one group chat going where every question got an answer the same day.

In Xi'an our guide Joyce Liu was the standout. She walked us through the Terracotta Army in the right order so that the story built instead of repeating itself, and she kept a group that included a nine-year-old and a seventy-eight-year-old moving without ever making anyone feel rushed.

The logistics were the quiet win. We were taken into the Forbidden City before the main crowds arrived, the luggage moved between the three cities without any of us touching it, and the coach was waiting exactly where we had been told it would be at every stop.

Two of us are vegetarian and one cannot eat wheat, and both were looked after at every single meal without us re-explaining anything, which has never happened on a family trip before. We would book them again tomorrow.
