We came to Chengdu for one reason, the panda volunteer day, and it turned out to be the best-organised day of our whole trip. The team sent us the meeting time and what to wear two days ahead, which mattered, because the base requires closed shoes and long sleeves and we would not have known.
The session itself was far more hands-on than I expected. We cleaned the enclosure, carried bamboo, and helped prepare the panda cakes before watching the keepers feed the animals we had just looked after. Our guide explained what the keepers were doing the whole time instead of leaving us to guess, and her English was easily good enough for the questions we kept asking.
Away from the pandas the small things were handled: an airport pickup that landed after midnight, a hotel within walking distance of the teahouse district, and a hotpot dinner booked for the one evening our stomachs were ready for it.
Two weeks before we flew they sent a checklist: the visa-free rules that applied to us, what to pack for the base, and a contact who answered on WhatsApp within minutes. That is the part I would not want to arrange myself.
