We booked the eight-day Lhasa to Everest Base Camp route as a couple, and everything that usually goes wrong on a Tibet trip simply did not. Our Tibet permit was arranged for us and the scanned copy reached us before we flew, so check-in on the way in was a two-minute conversation instead of a drama.

Our guide in Lhasa is the reason the first two days worked so well. He was honest about altitude rather than cheerful about it, told us to write off the first afternoon, and moved the Potala Palace visit to the second morning so that we were properly acclimatised before the steps. He also handled the hotel registration and the monastery tickets while we sat over tea.

On the road the car was comfortable and the driver stayed calm through the long Yamdrok and Shigatse days. When our flight out of Lhasa moved by a day, the office rebooked the hotel and the transfer without us having to ask twice.

The advice I would pass on is to trust their pacing. They talked us out of adding another day at Everest and they were right. We have travelled with three other operators in Asia and this is the first time the office and the guide clearly talked to each other.
