Overview

Shanghai's international medical departments were built for the foreign community that has lived in the city for thirty years, which means appointments rather than queues and English at the registration desk. The screening is arranged before you travel, from the hospital's own list of packages, and takes a morning; the rest of the programme is arranged around it and kept deliberately quiet.

Suzhou is the counterweight: the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden, the canals of Pingjiang Road, and lunch in the city where China refined the idea of a garden as a place to rest. Zhujiajiao water town and the Qingpu lakes give you a second slow day, and a licensed TCM clinic provides a consultation and a single treatment session, with the former French Concession and the Bund taken at walking pace rather than on a schedule.

Six days, five hotel nights, private vehicle and English-speaking guide throughout. We arrange the appointment, the interpretation and the transport; the clinical decisions are yours and your doctor's, and we neither advise on treatment nor interpret results ourselves. Low-mobility versions of every day can be planned on request.

Day 2Shanghai: Health Screening at an International Medical Department

Morning — the appointment
Shanghai's international medical departments were set up for the foreign community that has worked in the city for three decades, and they run on appointment systems rather than walk-in queues, with English-speaking staff at registration and in the imaging suites. You fast from the previous evening and arrive early; the morning covers the package you chose in advance, which for most guests means blood and urine panels, abdominal and thyroid ultrasound, an electrocardiogram and chest imaging, with a physician's consultation at the end. Everything on the list is set by the hospital, and we will send you their current options before you book so that you, or your own doctor, can decide what you want.

Late morning — interpretation and results
Your guide and the hospital coordinator are both present throughout, so nothing is lost in translation and nothing needs to be repeated. Results are issued in Chinese and are explained to you on the day where the hospital can, with written reports generally following within a few days; we can arrange translation of the full report and a review appointment with an interpreter. To be clear about what we are and are not: LinkedTours arranges the appointment, the transport, the interpretation and the follow-up logistics. We do not give medical advice, recommend treatments, or interpret results ourselves, and any decision about your health belongs with you and your own physician.

Lunch
A light lunch - soup, rice, steamed vegetables - either at the hospital or back at the hotel, whichever your energy allows. Most people want nothing more than a bowl of congee after a fasting morning, and the hotel kitchen will bring it to the room. Your guide orders ahead so that it arrives when you do. There is no rush back to the room afterwards: your guide will settle the bill and collect the paperwork, and will not knock on your door until you have had a chance to sleep. If you would prefer to eat nothing at all, say so and the room will simply be left quiet.

Afternoon — rest in Shanghai
The afternoon is free and the vehicle stays available. Sleep, or take a short, level walk in Fuxing Park, the former French Concession garden a few blocks from most central hotels, where plane trees, a rose garden and a pond make for an easy half hour on flat ground. If energy permits, an early evening drive along the Bund gives you the river and the Pudong skyline without any walking at all beyond a few hundred metres. Fuxing Park has been the French Concession's public garden since 1909; there are benches under the plane trees, a small lake, and a corner where retired couples dance in the late afternoon, which is worth watching for ten minutes on the way through.

Evening — dinner and an early night
Shanghai cooking is sweet and light by Chinese standards, which suits a day like this: steamed fish, drunken chicken, greens in stock, and a bowl of rice. Ask your guide to keep the meal simple and low in oil. An early night; the next two days are quiet ones. If you would rather stay in, most central hotels will deliver a plain meal to the room, and there is no obligation to go out at all on this day. Anything heavy in sugar, oil or salt is worth avoiding tonight; tell the restaurant in advance and the kitchen will cook to that instruction without any fuss.

Day 5Shanghai: a TCM Consultation, Tuina and a Slow Afternoon

Morning — a licensed TCM clinic in Shanghai
Shanghai has both the large public hospitals of Chinese medicine and smaller licensed private clinics, and for this appointment we use one of the latter, where a practitioner can give you an hour rather than fifteen minutes. The consultation is the classical one: pulse at three positions on each wrist, examination of the tongue, and a long set of questions about sleep, digestion, appetite, temperature preference and energy. What comes out of it is a body-constitution assessment against the nine standard types, explained to you as a description rather than a diagnosis, with the working vocabulary of the tradition - qi, blood, cold and heat, dampness - set out plainly so that the conversation makes sense.

Late morning — one session of treatment
You then have one session, of the kind you chose when booking: tuina massage, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, or a herbal foot soak. A single session is a treatment experience, not a course, and nobody should expect anything from it other than a sense of relaxation and an understanding of what the technique does. Needles are sterile and single-use; if you take blood-thinning medication or are pregnant, tell us in advance and we will arrange a session without acupuncture. Practitioners here hold a national licence, and no advice will be given about changing any medicine prescribed to you by your own doctor.

Lunch
A mild Shanghai lunch near the clinic: steamed or poached fish, a clear soup, a plate of greens in stock, and rice. Shanghai cooking is sweet and light by Chinese standards, which suits a day like this, and the kitchen will reduce both the sugar and the oil if you ask. If you would rather eat after the session than before it, your guide will simply reverse the order; the clinic is a ten-minute drive from most central hotels. Most guests ask for the meal after the consultation rather than before, and the clinic is used to that. There is a small tea room on the ground floor where you can wait with a cup of chrysanthemum tea if you arrive early.

Afternoon — the plane trees
The former French Concession is the easiest part of Shanghai to walk slowly in: broad pavements, tall plane trees, low garden walls and lane houses, Wukang Road and the streets around it. Your guide will set a short route of perhaps an hour with two cafe stops, and the vehicle follows a few minutes behind so that you can stop whenever you like. Tianzifang, a block of 1930s lane houses converted into studios and small shops, is worth thirty minutes if you want to see how the city reuses its old residential fabric. The architecture is the point: 1920s apartment blocks, the odd Art Deco corner, and walled gardens that give the streets a quiet you would not expect a kilometre from the ring road.

Evening — the Bund, then dinner
Finish the day with a short drive along the Bund and a walk of a few hundred metres on the promenade if the weather is kind; the Pudong skyline opposite is lit until about ten. Dinner nearby, and an early night before the departure day. The restaurants along the Bund's side streets are better value than the ones facing the river, and your guide will steer you to them. The promenade itself is wide and level with a bench every few hundred metres, so the walk can be cut to five minutes if you would rather look at the river from the car.
