This is the layover for travellers who would rather see the city's own centre than its riverfront. We meet you at the airport or your airport hotel, drive in on the expressway, and keep the walking to one hill and one building - both within a few minutes of each other and both close enough to the road back to Baiyun.
Yuexiu Hill is where Guangzhou has been centred for more than two thousand years. The Five Rams on top of it were made in 1959 by Yin Jichang, Chen Benzong and Kong Fanwei: eleven metres, 130 blocks of granite, the lead ram with ears of rice in its mouth - the origin of the city's nickname. A stretch of the Ming city wall survives in the middle of the park, and Zhenhai Tower of 1380, the Five-Storey Building, has held a museum since 1929 and the Guangzhou Museum since 1950.
Below the hill stands the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, designed by Lu Yanzhi and completed in 1931 on the site of his presidential office. From there it is a straightforward run back to the airport, timed to your flight.
How this works
This is the layover programme for travellers who would rather see the city's own centre than its riverfront. We meet you at the airport or your airport hotel, drive in on the airport expressway, and keep the walking to one hill and one building, both within a few minutes of each other and both close enough to the road back to Baiyun. Timings are set from your check-in, and if the connection is too tight we will tell you before you book rather than after.
Yuexiu Park and the Five Rams
Yuexiu Hill is where Guangzhou has been centred for more than two thousand years, and the park on top of it holds the emblems of the city. The Five Rams were made in 1959 by Yin Jichang, Chen Benzong and Kong Fanwei: eleven metres high, carved from 130 blocks of granite, the lead ram with ears of rice in its mouth - the origin of Guangzhou's nickname. A stretch of the Ming city wall survives in the middle of the park, which is a useful correction to the idea that the hill is only a garden.
Zhenhai Tower, if time allows
The Five-Storey Building on the Small Coiled Dragon ridge - properly Zhenhai Tower - was raised in 1380 by the Ming marquis Zhu Liangzu, and has held a museum since 1929; it has been the Guangzhou Museum since 1950, and the tower and the adjoining wall were listed together as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2013. Where the schedule permits, the collection gives the fastest possible account of the city you are passing through.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Below the hill stands the memorial hall designed by Lu Yanzhi and completed in 1931, on the site of the presidential office Sun Yat-sen occupied as extraordinary president. At 48.63 metres high it is the largest memorial building to him anywhere, and its Song-palace exterior over a steel and concrete interior is the clearest statement Guangzhou makes about being both old and modern. From there it is a straightforward run back to the airport, timed to your flight.

Send us your flight numbers and we confirm whether the stopover fits before you commit. If the connection is tight we drop Zhenhai Tower rather than rush the hill, and the guide tells you which version you are getting. Entrance tickets payable locally.
Send us your landing and departure times and we will tell you honestly whether it works, because the answer depends on your terminal and the security queue rather than on the sights. We work backwards from your boarding time and build in the return drive to Baiyun and re-entry security. If it does not fit, we say so.
Often yes. The exemption covers 57 countries at 65 ports, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of them, with the permitted area covering the whole of Guangdong province. You need a confirmed onward ticket to a third country, and the 240 hours start at midnight on the day after entry. Verify your nationality on the National Immigration Administration list before you book flights.
At the airport or at your airport hotel, with a name sign, and the vehicle goes straight in on the expressway. The programme is deliberately built around one hill and one building, both within minutes of each other and both close to the road back to Baiyun. That is what makes it viable on a short connection.
It is a hill with slopes and steps, so a certain amount of walking is unavoidable; the memorial hall is at street level and fully accessible. If stairs are a problem for anyone in the party, tell us when you book and we weight the day towards the hall and the lower paths of the park rather than the summit.
Usually, but it is occasionally closed to visitors when a performance is being staged. We check for your date and, if it is closed, substitute Zhenhai Tower of 1380 inside Yuexiu Park instead. You will know which version you are getting before you land.
When the connection allows, yes. Zhenhai Tower of 1380, the Five-Storey Building, holds the city museum and stands inside Yuexiu Park. It is the first thing we drop if your connection is tight, because it costs time on the hill and the park walk is the better use of a short stopover.
No. Entrance tickets are payable locally, as they are on all our Guangzhou days, because admission is set by the sites themselves. They are inexpensive and your guide buys them on the day. Everything else, including the vehicle, the guide and the transfers, is in the price.
