Itinerary

Day 1Colonial Charm & Culinary Adventures: Shamian Island, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Cantonese Opera

Morning — Shamian Island & Dim Sum
Shamian Island is a tranquil sandbar lined with European-style colonial buildings and the Gothic Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel along leafy riverside promenades. Begin with a dim-sum breakfast of har gow (shrimp dumplings) and char siu bao (barbecue pork buns) at a historic teahouse such as Lianxiang Lou.

Afternoon — Sacred Heart Cathedral & Beijing Road
The Sacred Heart Cathedral is China's largest granite Gothic church, begun in 1863 using stone imported for its vaulted ceilings and stained glass. Later, stroll Beijing Road, an ancient commercial street where glass walkways reveal buried Song-dynasty pavements, and try double-skin milk pudding.

Evening — Cantonese Opera & Night Market
In the evening, watch a Cantonese opera performance at Liwan Theater, with your guide explaining the classic stories behind the elaborate costumes. Then browse Huifu Night Market for stuffed lotus root, clay-pot rice, or the famously pungent stinky tofu.

Trip Notes

A one-day private tour with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle. Dim sum lunch is included. Entrance tickets payable locally where they apply.

Is Shamian Island really car-free?

Largely yes. It is a sandbank in the Pearl River, laid out as a British and French concession after 1859, and its grid of banyan avenues and arcaded facades is closed to through traffic. That is what makes it the most pleasant walking ground in the city. Two thirds of a mile of arcaded frontages survive, and the ground is flat throughout.

What is the Sacred Heart Cathedral?

It is the Catholic cathedral of Guangzhou and the largest granite Gothic church in China, built of granite between 1863 and 1888. The granite is the point: the whole structure, including the twin towers, was cut in stone rather than brick and rendered. It stands in the old city a short drive from Shamian, and it is an active parish.

Can we attend Mass at the cathedral?

Often yes, but the schedule changes and we confirm it for your date rather than promise it. If attending a service matters to your party, tell us when you book and we will build the day around the timetable. On days when the cathedral is closed to visitors, we substitute another treaty-port building on the same route.

Is Cantonese opera performed every day?

No. Performances run to their own schedule and we confirm what is on for your date before you arrive. When nothing suitable is staged we substitute a tea session with live instrumental music rather than drop the evening entirely. This is the one part of the day we cannot guarantee.

Is this day mostly walking or driving?

Two or three kilometres in total, mostly on Shamian's flat, shaded avenues and the cathedral forecourt. The rest of the day is driven, with the vehicle waiting. This is one of our easiest Guangzhou days and suits travellers who do not want a long walk.

Can we photograph inside the cathedral?

Usually yes outside services, but restrictions are set locally and change, so treat it as a question for your guide on the day. Photography inside the opera house is normally not permitted during a performance. Flash and tripods are the things that get stopped everywhere.

Is dim sum lunch included?

Yes. Lunch is a sit-down dim sum meal in the old commercial quarter, included in the price of the day. Tea is part of the meal rather than an extra. Tell us about dietary requirements when you book and the kitchen will work around them.
