A one-day private tour of contemporary Guangzhou: the Guangdong Museum for the province's archaeology and natural history, Haixinsha Island for the head-on view of the skyline, and the Canton Tower, one of the tallest structures in the world at 600 metres. Good as a first day, and easy to combine with an airport transfer.
Morning — Guangdong Museum & Haixinsha Park
The Guangdong Museum, housed in a building shaped like a lacquered treasure box, explores Lingnan culture through ancient ceramics and natural-history exhibits. Afterwards, relax at Haixinsha Park by the Pearl River, where you can photograph the Canton Tower across the water.
Afternoon — Choose Your Experience
Option one is Chimelong Resort, home to a safari park with giant pandas and tigers and a seasonal water park. Option two is a Foshan day trip to the Ancestral Temple, known for lion-dance performances, and the Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, a Ming-era ceramics workshop still in use.
Evening — Airport Transfer
In the evening, your guide and driver transfer you to the airport for your departure. If time allows, enjoy a farewell meal of roast suckling pig at Bing Sheng en route.

This is the day for travellers who want to understand what Guangzhou became rather than only what it was. The order matters: the museum gives you the province in two hours, Haixinsha gives you the skyline from the water side, and the tower gives you the same skyline from above, lit, after dark.
Two hours covers the galleries that matter, and the building itself is half the reason to go. The museum is free to enter, closes on Mondays, and runs timed entry booked against your passport, which we arrange before you arrive so the queue is a formality rather than an hour of your day.
They answer different questions and the honest answer is that you want both. Haixinsha is a flat riverside park on the south bank that puts the whole Zhujiang New Town skyline and the tower in one frame, at no cost. The deck is 600 metres of vertical, and what you buy is the river's geometry from above at the hour the lights come on.
A two o'clock start, and the timetable falls into place from there. The museum takes the afternoon light, Haixinsha catches the skyline while it is still legible, and the tower goes last so that you ride up in daylight and come down after the city has switched on. In midsummer that means the deck around seven.
Not comfortably, and we would rather say so than sell it. This route runs seven to eight hours with two long stops, so it needs a full day or an overnight. If you have four hours of city time, the layover version covers Haixinsha and the tower without the museum, and the timing is built around your flight numbers instead.
It was the opening ceremony venue for the 2010 Asian Games, and that event is the reason the whole south bank exists in its present form. The island is now a public park with the best free view in the city, and the walk from the metro to the water takes about ten minutes on level ground.
It is an optional add-on rather than part of the base route, and it works best as the last hour. The evening cruise runs an hour on the river with both banks lit, and we book it only when the group wants it, because a tower deck at dusk and a river cruise at dusk are the same experience from two angles and most people only need one.
