Overview

This 9-day Xinjiang Silk Road tour runs from Kashgar in the far west through Bole, Yining, and Nalati to Turpan and Urumqi in the east. It is a leisure route for families and student groups tracing oasis towns, grasslands, and desert ruins.

Flagship sights include Kashgar's 2,000-year-old Uyghur old town and the 1442 Id Kah Mosque, Sayram Lake and Nalati Grassland in the Tian Shan, and Turpan's Jiaohe Ruins, a UNESCO Silk Roads site since 2014, with its Karez wells. Urumqi's Heavenly Lake closes the loop.

Routing flies or drives west-to-east to cut the long distances, ending in Urumqi for departure. Internal flights keep the pace family-friendly while still reaching the Pamir edge, the hottest spot in China at Turpan, and alpine lakes near the capital.

Trip Notes

Xinjiang is inside China, so most visitors need a Chinese visa; Urumqi airport supports 240-hour visa-free transit with an onward ticket, and Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, and the UK have short-term visa-free entry as noted.

May-October is best; Turpan is scorching in July-August and winter is harsh on the plateau. The tour is moderate with long drives eased by internal flights, so families and seniors cope, but bring layers for 20 C day-night swings. Carry cash for bazaars, book 3-6 weeks ahead, and keep your passport handy for any checkpoint.
