Because giant pandas feed and move in the cool of the morning and sleep through the middle of the day. Arriving at opening is the single decision that most affects what you see. By early afternoon in warm weather most of the animals are resting out of sight, and no guide can change that.
The morning, which is the active period and the reason the visit is scheduled as it is. The enclosures are spread across a large wooded site, so the morning is fully used without feeling rushed. If you want longer, the two-day study programme adds a second session.
A reconstructed Han-dynasty-style lane beside the Wuhou Shrine, the temple of the Three Kingdoms period. It is the best-known old street in Chengdu and the natural place to spend the afternoon after the panda base. The shrine next to it is the older of the two and worth the extra hour.
Bian lian, the Sichuan opera technique in which the performer changes masks in an instant, faster than the eye can follow. It is the best-known element of Sichuan opera and the reason the evening works for visitors who do not speak Chinese. The rest of the performance covers song, acrobatics and comedy.
Yes, a Sichuan hotpot or banquet dinner is included in the evening before the opera. Tell us your spice tolerance and any dietary requirements when you book and the restaurant will work to it. Drinks other than tea and soft drinks are settled locally.
Yes. The day is customisable, and we can replace the opera with a teahouse evening or a longer dinner. Some parties prefer the quiet of a teahouse after a full day, particularly with children. Tell us when you book and we will re-price the evening.
No, and we would rather say so. These are animals in large enclosures, and weather and season affect how active they are. The IUCN reclassified the giant panda from Endangered to Vulnerable in 2016, after decades of population recovery, though the species remains conservation-dependent. The early slot maximises the chance, and the base holds a large population, which is why sightings are the norm rather than the exception. What we cannot do is promise a particular behaviour.
