8-Day Yunnan Highlands Tour: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La

This is an 8-day private tour of the Yunnan highlands for travellers who want China's south-west at a slower pace: two nights in Kunming, one in Dali on Erhai Lake, two in Lijiang, one in Shangri-La and a final night back in Kunming. It links the Shilin Stone Forest, a UNESCO Global Geopark of limestone pillars up to 30 metres high, with the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lijiang, the 5,596-metre Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the Tibetan plateau town of Shangri-La and Pudacuo National Park. An English-speaking guide and a private vehicle run the whole way.

Yunnan is the only Chinese destination on The New York Times '52 Places to Go in 2026' list, and the numbers behind that are real: Yunnan's border inspection authorities recorded more than 990,000 inbound travellers by 1 August 2026, of which 819,700 entered visa-free. Ctrip reported inbound hotel bookings in the province up 41 percent year on year over summer 2026, with 23 percent of foreign visitors staying seven nights or longer. Direct international flights serve Kunming Changshui and Lijiang Sanyi airports.

Lijiang alone holds three UNESCO listings: the Old Town (World Cultural Heritage, 1997), the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas (World Natural Heritage, 2003), whose core is in Lijiang, and the Ancient Naxi Dongba Literature Manuscripts (Memory of the World, 2003). The itinerary is a stand-alone holiday and also works as a second week behind Beijing, Xi'an or Chengdu.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yunnan covered by China's visa-free policies?
Partly, and the detail matters. Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and most Schengen states currently hold unilateral visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days until 31 December 2026. United States passport holders normally enter on the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, under which the permitted stay area in Yunnan is limited to Kunming, Yuxi, Chuxiong, Honghe, Wenshan, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, Dali and Lijiang - which does not include Shangri-La. Tell us your nationality at enquiry and we will confirm the position and adjust the Shangri-La night if needed.

How high does this tour go?
Kunming sits at about 1,890 metres, Lijiang at about 2,400 and Shangri-La at about 3,160, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rising to 5,596. The ascent is staged over four days rather than done in one jump, and the Shangri-La day is deliberately light. Travellers with heart or respiratory conditions should take medical advice first.

How do we travel between the cities?
Kunming to Dali is by high-speed rail, Dali to Lijiang and Lijiang to Shangri-La by private vehicle with a driver and guide, and Shangri-La back to Kunming by train. The rail sectors are quoted separately at full fare plus a 50 CNY booking fee per ticket.

When is the best time to go?
March to May and September to November give clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The plateau stays cool even in summer, which is why Yunnan has become a summer destination in its own right. Winter is dry and sunny with cold nights.

Can this run in the other direction?
Yes. Starting in Shangri-La and finishing in Kunming is a common choice for groups arriving on a Lijiang flight, and the price is unchanged.

• Shilin Stone Forest, Kunming - a UNESCO Global Geopark of limestone karst pillars formed from Permian seabed around 270 million years ago, with guided walks through the Major and Minor Stone Forest.

Altitude and health. Kunming is at about 1,890 metres, Lijiang at about 2,400 and Shangri-La at about 3,160. The programme ascends gradually and the Shangri-La day keeps walking light and optional, but travellers with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions should obtain medical advice before booking. Drink more water than usual and expect the first night at altitude to be a light one.

Visa and entry. Entry rules differ by nationality. Several countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, hold unilateral visa-free entry for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026. The 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers 57 nationalities but restricts the permitted stay area within Yunnan to Kunming, Yuxi, Chuxiong, Honghe, Wenshan, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna, Dali and Lijiang - Shangri-La is outside it. Weather and packing. The plateau is mild by day and cold at night all year. Shangri-La can drop below freezing at night even in summer. Bring layers, a windproof outer shell, sun protection and broken-in walking shoes. Rain is common from June to September.

Payment and receipts. Deposits are settled by bank transfer against a formal invoice, with the balance due 30 days before arrival. Rates are quoted at 1 USD = 6.5 CNY and hold for 7 days.

Pace and comfort. Walking on this route is moderate: the Stone Forest and Lijiang Old Town are on paved paths, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain day uses the cable car, and the Pudacuo boardwalks are flat but at 3,600 metres. Every day can be shortened on the ground.
