Overview

Yunnan is the most varied province on the visa-free transit route, and this six-day programme keeps to its two most comfortable bases. Kunming, at 1,900 metres, is spring-like all year and holds the Stone Forest, one of the type sites of the South China Karst. Three hours west by rail, Lijiang sits at 2,400 metres beneath the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with a UNESCO-listed old town of canals, bridges and Naxi courtyards.

The trip is deliberately slow, with two nights in Kunming and three in Lijiang and no internal flights. Travellers arriving under China's visa-free transit arrangements can enter through Kunming Changshui International Airport and leave from Lijiang, which makes the loop straightforward.

Highlights

  • The Stone Forest at Shilin, whose limestone towers were inscribed as part of the South China Karst World Heritage site in 2007
  • The Dianchi lakeshore and the Western Hills, with the Dragon Gate grottoes cut into the cliff above the water
  • Lijiang Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, where the Naxi canals still run along the lanes
  • The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 5,596 metres, and its glacier park reached by cable car
  • Baisha and Shuhe, the quieter Naxi villages north of Lijiang, with the Ming-dynasty murals at Baisha
  • The Yunnan folk food of the plateau: the crossing-the-bridge rice noodles of Kunming and the Naxi hotpot of Lijiang
  • Lashi Lake, a wetland on the old Tea Horse Road where the horses are still worked

Itinerary

Day 1City Highlights: Green Lake Park, Yunnan Ethnic Village, Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles Experience

Morning — Green Lake Park
Begin at Green Lake Park (Cuihu), Kunming's urban oasis of willow-lined water where locals dance, play instruments, and feed black-headed gulls in winter. Its teahouses and summer lotus blooms offer a gentle introduction to the city's laid-back charm.

Afternoon — Yunnan Ethnic Village
Explore this cultural park showcasing 25 of Yunnan's ethnic groups, including the Dai, Bai, and Naxi. Watch traditional dances, tour replica villages, and experience rituals like the Dai water-splashing festival that highlight the province's diversity.

Evening — Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles
Dive into Kunming's signature dish, Guoqiao Mixian, at a local spot such as Shangri-La Cafe. Assemble raw ingredients—meat, vegetables, herbs—into a piping-hot broth, and pair it with Yunnan Pu'er tea for an authentic ritual.

Morning — Stone Forest (Shilin)
Venture about 1.5 hours to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, a surreal labyrinth of limestone karsts sculpted over 270 million years. Wander formations like Sword Peak Pond and “Ashima,” inspired by Yi ethnic legend, on a guided walk through its geology and folklore.

Optional — Jiuxiang Caves
Extend the day at Jiuxiang, a spectacular network of caves and waterfalls. Ride a boat through a subterranean river, walk past stalactite forests, and cross suspension bridges in what is called a “Museum of Karst Caves.”

Day 3Dianchi Lake & Western Hills

Morning — Dianchi Lake & Haigeng Park

Afternoon — Dragon Gate (Longmen)
Ride a cable car up the Western Hills to Dragon Gate, a Taoist and Buddhist cliffside complex carved into the rock. Walk narrow paths and grottoes adorned with statues, and admire panoramic views over Dianchi Lake from the summit phrase “Touch the Southern Sky.”

Evening — Wild Mushroom Hotpot
In summer, savor Yunnan's seasonal delicacy—wild mushroom hotpot—at Lost Garden Restaurant, with porcini, matsutake, and morel mushrooms simmered in a herbal broth, a must for adventurous foodies.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4Arrival & Lijiang Old Town

Arrival — Welcome to Lijiang
