Overview

This four-day Chengdu retreat is built for travelers who want to do more than look at pandas. It pairs a working morning at the Dujiangyan Panda Base with a professional Sichuan cooking class, Jinli Ancient Street and a traditional Gongfu tea ceremony - four days, two people to thirty, private guiding throughout, and no other group in your vehicle.

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and one of China's fastest-growing technology and innovation hubs. It is also the only major Chinese city where you can volunteer inside a panda conservation base in the morning and learn to balance mala from a trained chef in the afternoon. Your days are sequenced so that the most physical activity happens early, leaving the evenings free for teahouses, hotpot and the city's famously unhurried pace.

LinkedTours operates this route on a private basis year-round. All guiding is in English, all vehicles are licensed for foreign visitors, and every meal is arranged with the dietary requirements of your party confirmed in advance.

Who it suits. Families with children aged eight and above, small corporate or management teams looking for a shared physical task, and independent travelers who want a compact Sichuan introduction without a long coach itinerary.

Frequently asked.

  • Can we actually touch the pandas? No - and no operator can honestly promise this. The Dujiangyan volunteer programme is a working conservation placement: you prepare bamboo and supplementary food, clean enclosures and assist keepers under supervision, with viewing of the animals built into the day. In 2020 China banned commercial panda contact for animal-welfare reasons, and we do not offer it.
  • Is the altitude a problem? Dujiangyan sits at roughly 700 m and Chengdu at about 500 m. There is no altitude concern on this itinerary.
  • How physically demanding is Day 2? Expect four to five hours on your feet with some lifting of bamboo bundles. It is well within reach of most travelers but it is a working day, not a photo stop.
  • Do you cater for allergies? Yes. Sichuan cuisine uses peanut and sesame oil widely; tell us at booking and the cooking class menu and every restaurant booking are adjusted, with the allergy restated in writing to each kitchen.
  • When is the best time to travel? March to May and September to November give the most comfortable temperatures. July and August are hot and humid, and the Chinese New Year period brings heavy domestic demand.

Highlights

  • A working morning at the Dujiangyan Panda Base - the conservation and research facility in the foothills of the Qingcheng range, where you assist keepers rather than simply observe.
  • A professional Sichuan cooking class - prepare Kung Pao Chicken, Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan Noodles with a chef trained in Chengdu's commercial kitchens, then eat what you cooked.
  • Jinli Ancient Street - a restored Qing-style thoroughfare of timber fronts, red lanterns and craft workshops, explored on a team scavenger hunt that gets you talking to artisans.
  • The Sichuan Cuisine Museum - a working museum and demonstration kitchen documenting one of China's eight great culinary traditions and its UNESCO-listed food heritage.
  • A traditional Gongfu tea ceremony - a seated ceremony in a Chengdu teahouse, the institution at the centre of the city's man huo (slow life) reputation.
  • Welcome Sichuan hotpot dinner - a shared table on arrival, which for most visitors is the first and best introduction to mala.
  • Private English-speaking guiding throughout - one guide for the whole programme, not a series of local meet-and-greets.
  • Sichuan opera face-changing - the province's signature performance art, available as an evening add-on in Chengdu.

Itinerary

Day 1Chengdu - Welcome to the Land of Pandas

Afternoon — Jinli Ancient Street
Explore Jinli Ancient Street, a pedestrian thoroughfare that recreates the atmosphere of traditional Sichuan streets with wooden architecture, red lanterns, and bustling craft shops. Your team participates in a scavenger hunt that encourages interaction with local artisans, sampling street food, and working together to solve cultural puzzles — setting the tone for collaborative learning throughout the retreat.

Evening — Welcome Sichuan Hotpot Dinner
Enjoy a welcome dinner at a restaurant specializing in Sichuan hotpot, where your team cooks fresh ingredients at the table in bubbling broth. This interactive meal naturally encourages conversation, cooperation, and shared discovery as you navigate the array of meats, vegetables, and dipping sauces that characterize Sichuan cuisine.

Day 2Chengdu - Panda Conservation Experience

Morning — Dujiangyan Panda Base Volunteering
Travel to the Dujiangyan Panda Base for an unforgettable volunteer experience. After orientation and donning work uniforms, your team splits into groups to assist keepers with daily tasks: cutting and weighing bamboo, cleaning enclosures, and preparing supplemental foods such as panda cakes. The hands-on work offers not only a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with pandas but also lessons in cooperation and attention to detail.

Afternoon — Conservation in Action
Continue volunteer activities by observing panda behavior and assisting with enrichment that stimulates the animals mentally and physically. Your team learns about the challenges of wildlife conservation in modern China and how the panda has become a symbol of international cooperation and environmental stewardship.

Evening — Debrief & Sichuan Dinner
Return to Chengdu for a debrief session in which your team reflects on the day's experiences, drawing connections between conservation work and business challenges such as sustainability, long-term thinking, and teamwork. Dinner features Sichuan cuisine at a restaurant that emphasizes farm-to-table ingredients and traditional cooking methods.

Day 3Chengdu - Culinary Teamwork & Cultural Wisdom

Morning — Sichuan Cooking Class
Participate in an intensive Sichuan cooking class led by a professional chef trained in Chengdu's renowned kitchens. Your team will learn to prepare classics such as Kung Pao Chicken, Mapo Tofu, and Dan Dan Noodles, mastering the balance of mala (numbing and spicy) flavors that define Sichuan cuisine. The collaborative act of prepping ingredients, timing dishes, and plating the final meal builds natural teamwork and communication.

Afternoon — Sichuan Cuisine Museum
Visit the Sichuan Cuisine Museum in Pixian, the world's only 'edible museum,' where more than 6,000 artifacts trace over 4,000 years of culinary history. Interactive exhibits demonstrate traditional fermentation, pickling, and cooking methods, including the centuries-old craft of making Pixian doubanjiang (broad bean chili paste), a cornerstone of Sichuan flavor. This context shows how regional cuisine reflects broader cultural values and business practices.

Evening — Traditional Tea Ceremony
Experience a Gongfu tea ceremony at a historic teahouse, a ritual style that originated in Fujian and Taiwan and is widely practiced across Sichuan. A tea master guides your team to appreciate tea through sight, aroma, and taste, while your guide explains how the ceremony embodies respect, patience, and attention to detail — principles equally relevant to leadership and team dynamics.

Day 4Chengdu - Strategic Workshop & Departure

Morning — Strategic Workshop
Engage in a strategic workshop facilitated by a China business consultant who will help your team synthesize insights from your Chengdu experiences into actionable plans. The session draws connections between Chengdu's 'slow life' (man huo) philosophy — rooted in the city's teahouse culture and relaxed pace — and modern challenges of work-life balance, innovation culture, and sustainable business practices. Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province and one of China's fastest-growing tech and innovation hubs, provides a fitting backdrop for reflecting on how regional culture shapes management thinking.

Afternoon — Free Time in Chengdu
Enjoy free time to explore at your own pace. You may visit the Wuhou Shrine (Wuhou Ci), a temple complex dedicated to Zhuge Liang (181–234 AD), the revered chancellor of the Shu Han kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period and one of China's most celebrated strategists. Alternatively, stroll through People's Park (Renmin Gongyuan), opened in 1911 on the site of the former Manchu garrison, where locals practice tai chi, play mahjong, and gather at riverside teahouses; or simply relax in a traditional teahouse absorbing the city's unhurried atmosphere. This unstructured time allows for individual reflection and informal team bonding.

Evening — Flight to Shanghai
Fly to Shanghai, China's largest city and its leading financial and commercial center, where energy and ambition create a striking contrast to Chengdu's relaxed pace. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and gather for a brief orientation to Shanghai and the team challenges ahead over the coming days.

Trip Notes

Before you book.

  • Entry requirements. China currently grants unilateral visa-free entry to citizens of 50 countries for stays up to 30 days, and 240-hour visa-free transit to travellers from 57 countries via designated ports. Policies and eligible-country lists change, so confirm your own nationality's status with the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate before booking. We will supply a confirmed hotel booking and itinerary for any visa application.
  • Passport validity. Please ensure your passport has at least six months' validity and blank pages for entry stamps.
  • Travel insurance. The insurance included in your programme is a standard inbound travel policy at 30 CNY per person per day. We strongly recommend that you also hold a comprehensive policy covering medical evacuation and trip cancellation.
  • Paying in China. Alipay and WeChat Pay both accept international Visa and Mastercard now, and mobile payment is by far the most convenient option in shops and restaurants. Carry a small amount of cash for the rare vendor who does not accept cards, and let your bank know you are travelling.
  • Health and medication. Bring any prescription medicine in its original packaging with a copy of the prescription. If you have a food allergy, tell us at booking - we relay it in writing to every kitchen and, on the culinary elements of this programme, adjust the menu itself.
  • Weather and what to pack. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else on this itinerary. Layers are useful in spring and autumn; summers are hot and humid with heavy rain, and winters in northern China are cold and dry.
  • Group size and children. This programme operates privately for any party size from the tiers shown. Travellers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or travel with a signed consent letter.
  • Pace and fitness. The programme involves full days of walking on uneven ground, including steps at historic sites. Tell us in advance if any member of your party has limited mobility and we will adjust the routing.
  • Changes. Site opening hours, in particular at museums and government or corporate facilities, may change at short notice. Where a named visit becomes unavailable we substitute an equivalent experience of equal or greater value and inform you before arrival.
