Overview

Language is learned faster in the place it is spoken, and Xi'an has the advantage of being a city where Mandarin is the everyday language rather than one of several. This six-day programme puts three hours of class in the morning and a field visit in the afternoon, so that what is learned in the classroom is tested the same day in a market, a museum or a mosque courtyard.

Classes are taught in small groups graded by level, by teachers experienced with foreign learners, and materials are included. The field tasks are written to match the class level: beginners ask prices and directions, intermediate students interview shopkeepers, advanced students present on a site they have researched.

Highlights

  • Twelve hours of Mandarin classes across the programme, in small groups graded by level
  • Language practice in the Muslim Quarter and at the morning markets, with set tasks
  • The Shaanxi History Museum and the Shuyuanmen calligraphy quarter, visited with Chinese-language worksheets
  • A calligraphy session that gives the characters a physical logic
  • The Ming city wall and the Tang city sites, used as the setting for the week's final presentations
  • A closing session in which each group presents the work it has put together, with certificates
