Sanqing Mountain was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008 for what the granite is and for what ice and rain have done to it. The peaks are pillars and blades of stone standing out of forest, and the reason they photograph so well is the cloud: it sits in the valleys between the summits, so the tops appear to float. The name means the three pure ones, after the Taoist deities the three main summits are said to resemble.
We take the Jinsha cable car up rather than walking, which turns a half-day of climbing into fifteen minutes and leaves the day for the mountain. The South Garden loop is the classic circuit and holds the two rocks everybody photographs: the Python Emerging from the Mountain, a tall column on a narrower base, and the Goddess of the East, which from the right angle reads as a seated figure with her hands folded. The path is boardwalk and stone stair, about four hours at an easy pace. Your gate ticket carries a fingerprint and stays valid into the following day, which is what makes the second day work without paying again.

We take the Jinsha cable car up the east side rather than walking, which turns a half-day of climbing into fifteen minutes and leaves the day for the mountain itself. The South Garden loop is the classic circuit: the Python Emerging from the Mountain, a rock column some 120 meters of stone standing on a narrower base, and the Goddess of the East, a pillar that does, from the right angle, look like a seated figure with her hands folded.
The path is boardwalk and stone stair over about four hours at an easy pace, with the high-altitude plank walk along the cliff as the optional addition if you have the legs and the weather. Your gate ticket carries a fingerprint and is valid for re-entry the following day, which is what makes the two-day version of this trip work.
Sunrise from the eastern terraces is the reason to stay on the mountain, and it is a choice, not an obligation: the alternative is a slow start and the same views in better light. If you do get up, you are out forty minutes before the sun and standing on a platform with the cloud below you at the level of your knees.
The West Coast stack path is the walk of the trip. It runs along the cliff on a boardwalk bolted to the rock, level for long stretches, and it stays in cloud longer than the rest of the mountain because of how the valleys hold it. Most people find it the easiest of the long walks here precisely because it does not climb.
It ends at Sanqing Palace, a Taoist temple in a hollow on the north side with a building history going back to the Song and stonework laid out on eight-trigram lines. It is small, it is still used, and the tea house beside it is the best rest on the mountain. We walk down by the outer circuit and close the loop.

Please read the notes below before you book. This is a walking itinerary on stone stair and boardwalk. Weather closes the cliff plank walk without notice; we substitute the lower circuit when it does.
Q: How hard is the walking?
A: Moderate. The South Garden loop is roughly four hours at an easy pace on stone steps and boardwalk, with one sustained climb. The cable car removes the approach, which is what makes this manageable for most people. If you want less, we can shorten to the Python and Goddess viewpoints and come back down - about two hours.
Q: Should I stay on the mountain or at the foot?
A: On it, if you can. The hotels at the summit are basic but the reason to be there is the cloud and the sunrise, and both are gone by the time you ride up from the foot. If you need a proper bed, stay at the cable-car base and come up for the day - you lose the evening and the morning, which are the best parts.
Q: Does the two-day ticket really cover both days?
A: Yes. The gate ticket is registered against a fingerprint and is valid for re-entry the following day, which is unusual and is what makes the two-day structure sensible. The cable car is a separate ticket each ride, and it is included here for the ascent and the descent.
Q: What happens in bad weather?
A: The mountain closes the high plank walk in wind or ice, and in heavy fog the viewpoints simply deliver nothing. We monitor the forecast and, if the day looks poor, we move the ascent later or swap the order. In genuinely bad conditions we will say so before you travel rather than walk you up into cloud.
Q: Is the plank walk safe?
A: It is a boardwalk bolted to the cliff with railings, and it is closed when conditions are wrong. It is not a via ferrata. If heights bother you, the South Garden loop gives you the same peaks without it.
Q: When is the best season?
A: Autumn for clear air and the best chance of a cloud sea; spring for the azaleas on the higher slopes; summer is green, warm and misty. Winter brings ice and closes the plank walk, but the mountain is empty and the granite in snow is the best photograph of the year.
Q: Do I need a visa for this trip?
A: Most travellers do not. China's unilateral visa-free scheme now covers 50 countries for stays of up to 30 days, and the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme covers travellers from 57 countries entering through 65 designated ports. If you enter on 240-hour transit at Nanchang Changbei, note the stay area that applies to Jiangxi: you may move within Nanchang and Jingdezhen only, not the whole province. Check your nationality against the National Immigration Administration list before you book flights, because the scheme is reviewed and extended periodically.
