Overview

This classic one-day Xi'an tour heads west to Xianyang (咸阳) to combine imperial history, traditional village life, and loess cave dwellings in a single relaxed loop. It suits first-time visitors, families, and small groups who want a calm day outside the city.

The centerpiece is the Qianling Mausoleum, the Tang-dynasty tomb shared by Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian — China's only female emperor (reigned 690–705) — guarded by the famed Wordless Stele and a stone spirit way. You also visit Yuanjia Village, a restored Shaanxi folk village known for handicrafts and local food, and step inside a hillside cave dwelling to see how locals once lived.

The route strings the three stops along a west-bound loop from Xi'an with private transport, minimizing backtracking and giving you a full but unhurried day.

Highlights

  • Qianling Mausoleum — the Tang-dynasty tomb of Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian, the only Chinese tomb holding two reigning emperors.

  • Wordless Stele — a 6.3-meter stone monument at Qianling left deliberately blank by Wu Zetian, still unsigned after 1,300 years.

  • Stone spirit way — Qianling's approach is lined with carved guardians, horses, and foreign-envoys from the 7th century.

  • Empress Wu Zetian — learn the story of China's sole female emperor, who ruled formally from 690 to 705.

  • Yuanjia Village — a rebuilt Shaanxi folk village in Liquan County centered on traditional snacks, mills, and handicraft lanes.

  • Local food street — Yuanjia serves regional staples such as biangbiang noodles and steamed buns made on site.

  • Cave dwelling visit — step into a loess hillside yaodong to see the cool, earth-sheltered home style of the Shaanxi plateau.

  • Xianyang setting — the loop lies west of Xi'an in Shaanxi's historical heartland, once capital of the Qin state.

  • Private day transport — a dedicated car and guide keep the west-bound route flexible and backtrack-free.

Itinerary

Day 1Qianling Mausoleum, Zhangjiashan Village (Cave Dwellings), and Yuanjia Village

Morning — Qianling Mausoleum
Start your day at Qianling Mausoleum, the joint tomb of Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Empress Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule China as emperor in her own right. Qianling is the only Tang imperial tomb that has never been robbed, and it follows the natural shape of Liangshan Hill, approached along a grand stone statue avenue lined with carved horses, officials and statues of foreign envoys. Your guide will point out the wordless stele raised for Wu Zetian, and the museum on site houses artifacts excavated from the satellite tombs, giving a deeper understanding of Tang art and court customs.

Afternoon — Zhangjiashan Cave Dwellings and Yuanjia Village
In the afternoon, head to Zhangjiashan Village, known for its traditional cave dwellings cut into the loess hills. Visitors can explore the village, meet local residents and learn about the region's traditional lifestyle and architecture, and the surrounding natural landscape gives the place a peaceful atmosphere. Next, visit Yuanjia Village, a charming ancient village preserved and developed as a popular destination, with traditional architecture, narrow alleyways and a variety of local shops and restaurants. Cultural performances and handicraft workshops add to the experience, and the village is especially proud of its traditional foods, prepared in the old way.
