Overview

This 4-day classic Xi'an tour suits first-time visitors and small private groups who want to pair the city's deep ancient heritage with its modern growth and the surrounding countryside.

The trip centers on Xi'an's role as Chang'an, capital of the Tang dynasty (618–907) and eastern terminus of the Silk Road, where Tang-era heritage meets today's fast-developing metropolis. A rural stop lets you share country life with Shaanxi villagers, and the finale climbs Huashan — often called China's steepest mountain and one of the nation's Five Great Mountains, about 120 km east of Xi'an.

The plan groups the city's history and modern sights first, then devotes a full day to Huashan and the village, so the pace moves from culture to highland scenery without backtracking.

Highlights

  • Huashan Mountain — one of China's Five Great Mountains, about 120 km east of Xi'an, famed for its sheer cliffs often called the country's steepest.

  • Huashan cable car — a cableway lifts visitors toward the West Peak, easing the hardest climb for casual hikers.

  • Rural village life — spend time with Shaanxi villagers to see courtyard homes, farming, and home cooking.

  • Chang'an heritage — Xi'an was Chang'an, the Tang-dynasty (618–907) capital and a Silk Road hub still felt in its layout.

  • Modern Xi'an — contrast the ancient city with today's expanding metro, universities, and tech parks.

  • Shaanxi cuisine — taste hand-pulled biangbiang noodles and cold liangpi, staples of local food culture.

  • Silk Road history — learn how Xi'an anchored east–west trade for over a millennium as a dynasty capital.

  • Private pacing — a dedicated guide and vehicle let you set the day's intensity, including the Huashan ascent.

  • Countryside transfer — the village and Huashan sit east of the city and combine into one scenic day out.

  • First-timer fit — four days give enough depth for newcomers without the rush of a single-day loop.

Itinerary

Day 1The Terracotta Army Museum, Warrior Replica Making experience, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Tang Dynasty Dinner & Show

Morning — Warrior Replica Making & Terracotta Army
Begin at a local warrior replica-making center near the museum, where you craft a miniature terracotta warrior by hand and learn about the traditional techniques. Then visit the world-famous Terracotta Army, the burial complex of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site ranked among the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.

Cultural Insight
The army was discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well, and the thousands of life-sized soldiers, each with a distinct face, were buried to guard the emperor in the afterlife.

Afternoon — Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Drive back to the city and visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the Da Ci'en Temple. This is where the famous Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang translated the Buddhist scriptures he brought back from ancient India.

Evening — Tang Dynasty Dinner & Show
Enjoy a Tang Dynasty-styled dinner and music show, a cultural landmark that blends dining with performance. The evening features the renowned Great Tang Empress dance show.

Day 2Xi’an-Ancient City Tour and Muslim Community

Morning — City Wall & Small Wild Goose Pagoda
The Xi'an City Wall is the most complete and best-preserved ancient city fortification in China, rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD) atop Tang-era foundations and stretching 13.7 kilometers around the old city. Its complex of ramparts, watchtowers, and a surrounding moat now doubles as a vibrant urban park — cycle or walk the top for views of both historic and modern districts. Nearby, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, built in the Tang Dynasty (707–709 AD), is a graceful Buddhist monument renowned for its serene beauty through the seasons.

Afternoon — Muslim Quarter & Great Mosque
Xi'an was the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, drawing traders from the West since the 1st century BC, and its Muslim Quarter preserves that legacy of cultural exchange. As evening approaches the area buzzes with exotic shops and halal restaurants where you can taste local snacks and explore traditional markets. The Great Mosque — one of China's largest and best-preserved early mosques, first built in the Tang Dynasty and expanded over later dynasties — uniquely fuses Chinese architecture with Islamic design.

Evening — At Your Leisure
The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure — you may rest at the hotel or explore the nearby surroundings on your own.

Day 3Mount Hua

Leave Xi'an early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, to make the most of your day at Mount Hua.

Upon arrival, head to the West Peak Cable Car Station. Take the cable car up to the West Peak, also known as Lotus Flower Peak, which is the second-highest peak at 2,082 meters (6,831 feet). The cable car ride offers breathtaking views of the mountain's steep cliffs and dramatic landscapes.

From the West Peak, begin your hike towards the South Peak, the highest point on Mount Hua at 2,154 meters (7,070 feet). This route is challenging but rewarding, with steep stairways, narrow ridges, and awe-inspiring drops on either side. Along the way, you'll encounter famous spots like the Black Dragon Ridge and Golden Lock Pass, where visitors place locks for good luck. The highlight of this route is the Huashan Plank Walk, a narrow wooden plank path perched on the cliffside. Safety harnesses are provided, making it a thrilling yet safe experience.

After lunch, continue your exploration of Mount Hua. If time permits, visit the East Peak, known as the "Facing Sun Peak," which is the best place to catch the sunrise. The East Peak route is moderate in difficulty and offers incredible views of the surrounding peaks as the sun rises over the horizon. Alternatively, you can explore the Central Peak, also known as Jade Maiden Peak, which offers a quieter, more peaceful hiking experience.

Plan to descend the mountain by late afternoon to ensure you return to Xi'an before dark. Aim to be back in Xi'an by around 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, allowing you to rest and reflect on your adventurous day at Mount Hua.

This day tour offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and thrilling adventure, making it an unforgettable experience in Mount Hua.

Day 4Qianling Mausoleum, Zhangjiashan Village (Cave Dwellings), and Yuanjia Village

Morning — Qianling Mausoleum
Start your day at Qianling Mausoleum, the joint tomb of Emperor Gaozong of Tang and Empress Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule China as emperor in her own right. Qianling is the only Tang imperial tomb that has never been robbed, and it follows the natural shape of Liangshan Hill, approached along a grand stone statue avenue lined with carved horses, officials and statues of foreign envoys. Your guide will point out the wordless stele raised for Wu Zetian, and the museum on site houses artifacts excavated from the satellite tombs, giving a deeper understanding of Tang art and court customs.

Afternoon — Zhangjiashan Cave Dwellings and Yuanjia Village
In the afternoon, head to Zhangjiashan Village, known for its traditional cave dwellings cut into the loess hills. Visitors can explore the village, meet local residents and learn about the region's traditional lifestyle and architecture, and the surrounding natural landscape gives the place a peaceful atmosphere. Next, visit Yuanjia Village, a charming ancient village preserved and developed as a popular destination, with traditional architecture, narrow alleyways and a variety of local shops and restaurants. Cultural performances and handicraft workshops add to the experience, and the village is especially proud of its traditional foods, prepared in the old way.

  • Best season — spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the mildest weather for both city sights and the Huashan climb.

  • Fitness level — Huashan is strenuous; the cable car and West Peak route suit casual hikers, while the full ridge is demanding.

  • Dress code — hiking shoes and layers for Huashan; the summit is cooler and windier than the city.

  • Payment methods — carry RMB cash for the rural village, as mobile pay and cards are limited there.

  • Booking lead time — book a few days ahead; Huashan tickets and cable car slots fill in peak season.

  • Children and elderly — city days suit all ages, but Huashan is best for older kids and adults using the cable car.
