Overview

Hong Kong is a city of two halves that most visitors never separate: the harbour and the towers on one side, and an archipelago of islands with fishing villages, monasteries and country parks on the other. This three-day programme takes both, with a full day on Lantau and the harbour on the first and second days.

The trip is written to be easy on foot, with the cable car and the tram doing the climbing. It includes the old Chinese quarter of Sheung Wan as well as the colonial and financial districts, so that the city's earlier history is not lost behind the skyline. Extensions to Macao and to the Geopark at Sai Kung can be added.

Highlights

  • The Ngong Ping 360 cable car across Lantau, 5.7 kilometres over the hills to the plateau
  • The Tian Tan Buddha, 34 metres high and completed in 1993, and the Po Lin Monastery below it
  • Tai O, the stilt-house fishing village on the west of Lantau, where the lanes are built over the water
  • The Peak Tram of 1888 and the view from Victoria Peak over the harbour and the Kowloon shore
  • The Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour, running since 1888 and still the cheapest crossing in the city
  • Sheung Wan and the old Chinese quarter, with the dried-seafood streets and the Man Mo Temple
  • The Hong Kong Geopark at Sai Kung, whose hexagonal rock columns were formed by volcanic activity 140 million years ago

Trip Notes

Please read these notes before booking. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car is suspended in strong winds and a bus service replaces it when it is; the crossing then takes about 50 minutes. Tai O's stilt houses are on raised walkways and the village is narrow, so it is not suitable for large groups at speed. The Peak Tram has long queues in the late afternoon; we go up earlier and come down by bus.
