Libo is the reason to come to Guizhou in summer. The water in the Xiaoqikong valley runs over travertine and dissolved limestone, which scatters light the way a glacier lake does, and the result is a green that photographs look edited. The valley holds sixty-eight cascades in twelve kilometers, a forest that grows directly out of the streambed, and a stone bridge built by a merchant family in 1835.
What most visitors miss is Maolan, the nature reserve next door: two hundred square kilometers of conical karst peaks covered in primary forest, which is the same limestone topography as Guilin but forested, and rare enough that UNESCO includes it in the South China Karst listing. Add a Baiku Yao village and a quiet gorge, and four days fills without a single filler stop.
Xiaoqikong is a 12-kilometer river valley inside the South China Karst UNESCO property, and its color is not a filter: the water runs over a bed of travertine and dissolved limestone, which scatters light the way it does in a glacier lake. The route follows the river past the 68-level cascade, the water forest where trees grow straight out of the streambed, the Marshland, and Wolong Pool at the top end, and the seven-arch bridge that gives the place its name was built in 1835 by a local merchant family.
The park is 45 kilometers of road and walking in total, and the shuttle bus is compulsory - we include it. Our standard plan enters at the west gate and works downstream to the east, which is the direction that keeps the sun behind you and the crowds ahead; the alternative is the reverse, and it matters at eleven in the morning in July. The west gate also puts Daqikong, the larger and quieter gorge next door, at the end of the day rather than the beginning.
Maolan is a 200-square-kilometer nature reserve of conical karst peaks covered in primary forest - the same limestone topography as Guilin, but forested, which is rare enough that UNESCO includes it in the South China Karst listing. Walking the valley floor is easy; the climb to the ridge above the Stone Forest takes about ninety minutes and rewards with a view of hundreds of green cones disappearing into mist.
Yaoshan, on the road back, is a Yao village of the Baiku branch - the 'white trousers' Yao - whose women wear a costume that takes two years to make and whose men traditionally carried powder horns for hunting. It is a living village with a tourism economy attached, which means performances at set times and a ticket; your guide will tell you plainly which parts are ritual and which are staged, and the difference is worth knowing.
Daqikong is the other half of the Libo ticket and most tour groups skip it: a deeper, narrower gorge with a natural bridge 80 meters high and a boat ride up the Zhangjiang that takes twenty minutes and costs 20 yuan one way. Go early - the light comes down the gorge around nine and the water goes from green to emerald for about an hour.
Libo town itself is worth an evening. The old street runs along the river with wooden shopfronts, and the local specialty is grilled Zhangjiang fish with a sour-and-spicy rub, eaten outdoors at plastic tables. It is the least self-conscious tourist town in Guizhou, which is a compliment.
Libo joined the national high-speed network in 2023 with a station on the Guiyang-Guangzhou line, which changed the economics of the county: Guiyang is now an hour, Guilin ninety minutes, and Guangzhou four hours. If your train is later, the morning can hold a second pass at the Xiaoqikong water forest, which is at its best before nine.

Please read the notes below before you book. The Xiaoqikong valley is wet: the water forest section is walked on stones in running water, and the boardwalks are slick after rain. Bring shoes that can get wet and dry, and a dry bag for electronics. Maolan is a nature reserve with leeches in the wet season - long trousers tucked into socks are not a fashion statement. The park shuttle is compulsory and included.
From May to October, with the peak color between June and September when the flow is high and the sediment has settled. The mechanism is mineral rather than magical: the water runs over travertine and dissolved limestone, and suspended calcium carbonate scatters blue-green wavelengths. After heavy rain the valley runs brown for two or three days - which is worth knowing if you are booking around a fixed date. November to April is drier, the cascades are thinner, and the water is clearer but paler.
Six to eight kilometers over a full day, mostly flat, with the option of the shuttle between sections. The park road runs 45 kilometers in total and no private vehicle may enter, so the shuttle is part of the design. The only sustained climb is the water forest boardwalk, which is 300 meters of stepping stones in running water. We enter at the west gate and work downstream, which keeps the sun behind you and puts the crowds ahead rather than behind.
If you like forests more than waterfalls, it is the best day of the trip. Maolan is a 200-square-kilometer reserve of forested karst cones - the same topography as Guilin, but with primary forest on it, which is why UNESCO lists it within the South China Karst property. The valley walk is easy; the ridge climb takes about ninety minutes and gives you hundreds of green cones disappearing into mist. It is also quiet, because the day-trippers stay at Xiaoqikong.
A Baiku - white trousers - Yao village, twenty minutes from Xiaoqikong, where the women's costume is indigo cotton with wax-resist patterns and takes about two years to complete. The village has a tourism economy: performances at set times, craft stalls, a ticket. It is a real community rather than a set, and the honest version of the visit is that you are seeing a culture that has made a commercial decision about how to survive in a tourist economy. Your guide will say so plainly.
Libo joined the high-speed network in 2023, with a station on the Guiyang-Guangzhou line: Guiyang is about an hour, Guilin ninety minutes, Guangzhou four hours. That makes Libo unusually easy for a karst destination, and it is why this itinerary starts and ends at the station rather than an airport. If you are flying, come through Guiyang and take the train; the connection is faster than driving and considerably more comfortable.
Yes, and it is a common pairing - Libo to Xijiang is about four hours by road, or a train to Kaili plus an hour's drive. Our six-day classic does exactly that in the other direction. If you have a week, the natural shape is Guiyang, Huangguoshu, Libo, Xijiang, Guiyang; if you have four days and want water rather than villages, this is the one.
Yes, and the county adds no formality of its own. The unilateral scheme covers 50 countries for up to 30 days; the 240-hour transit covers 57 nationalities at 65 ports and requires a third-country onward ticket. Libo is reached by high-speed rail from Guiyang, which is where most routings clear immigration.
