Overview

This is a spring itinerary and it says so plainly: the azalea bloom lasts about six weeks and the cave is the anchor for the rest of the year. Zhijin is the largest cave system in China by volume, with 6.6 kilometers of mapped passage and a walking route of about half that, and the scale only registers when you are standing in a chamber 175 meters wide with a ceiling 150 meters above you.

The plateau above it, around Bijie, holds the Baili Azalea reserve - 125.8 square kilometers where forty-one species of wild rhododendron grow in thickets across the ridges, flowering from late March to early May depending on altitude. Outside the bloom the same plateau is a quiet upland of Yi and Miao villages with a much lower ticket and almost no visitors, and we will tell you which version you are buying before you book.

Itinerary

Day 1Anshun Arrival: the Old City After Dark

Anshun is a small city with a large history: it was the administrative seat of the Ming southwest, and the wall that survives in fragments along the old town was built in the fourteenth century to hold the Yunnan road. The evening walk takes in the restored West Gate, the Confucian temple courtyard and the network of lanes behind it, where the food is better than the architecture.

Anshun eating is a serious business and the local palate runs sour and fermented - the signature dish is a hotpot of sour soup with fish or pork, and the street food includes grilled tofu cubes, rice noodles in fermented soybean paste, and a sweet glutinous rice cake steamed in bamboo leaf. Your guide orders, you eat, and the walk continues; the whole evening is under three kilometers of walking and ends at the hotel.

Day 2Zhijin Cave: the Underground Palace

Zhijin Cave is 6.6 kilometers of mapped passage and the walking route covers about half of it, which takes a steady two and a half hours underground at a constant sixteen degrees. The scale is the point: the central hall is 175 meters wide and its ceiling runs to 150 meters, which makes the stalagmites look like furniture and the thirty-meter column the guides point out look like a small building. It was opened to visitors in 1980 and designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015, and the lighting, while theatrical, is restrained enough that you can still photograph the formations.

The cave is 120 kilometers west of Anshun through the Bijie plateau, so the drive is part of the day - terraced hillsides, coal towns and the deep gorge country that separates the two prefectures. Wear shoes with grip; the path is wet year-round and the handrails are there for a reason. On the return we stop at the Zhijin county town for a bowl of local buckwheat noodles before the drive back.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3Baili Azalea: the Spring Bloom

Baili Azalea - 'hundred-mile azalea' - is a protected area of 125.8 square kilometers on the Bijie plateau where forty-one species of wild azalea grow in thickets across the ridges. The bloom runs from late March to early May depending on altitude and species, with the peak usually in the first half of April, and it is one of the largest natural rhododendron landscapes in the world; the local government has run a festival here since 1992.

The park runs a shuttle on an 80 yuan all-network ticket, and the standard route takes in the Pudi and Jinpo scenic zones, where the paths run through tunnels of flowering shrubs rather than past them. Outside the bloom, the same plateau is a quiet upland of Yi and Miao villages with a much lower ticket price and almost no visitors - we will tell you honestly which version you are buying, because the difference is six weeks and several hundred thousand people.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4Anshun Departure

Anshun West station puts Guiyang twenty-five minutes away and Kunming two hours, which makes the city a practical start or end point rather than a place you pass through. If you are flying out of Guiyang we allow two and a half hours for the transfer and check-in, and if there is time we stop at the Batik Museum on the way, which explains the wax-resist tradition before you see it practiced in Kaili.

Meals: Breakfast

Trip Notes

Published: November 2026 — prices and itinerary reviewed on this date; later updates are shown in the revision note below.

Please read the notes below before you book. The cave is a constant sixteen degrees with high humidity and a wet path; a light jacket and shoes with grip are needed even in July. The walking route takes about two and a half hours underground and there are several hundred steps. The azalea plateau is at 1,600 to 1,900 meters - cooler than Anshun by five degrees, and the bloom dates shift by up to two weeks year to year.

When exactly does the azalea bloom?

Late March to early May, with the peak usually in the first half of April. The reserve runs from about 1,300 to 1,900 meters and the species flower in sequence by altitude, which stretches the season to six weeks; a warm spring pulls it forward by up to two weeks and a cold one pushes it back. We confirm the state of the bloom with the reserve about ten days before arrival and tell you honestly whether you are catching the peak, the tail, or neither.

What is Zhijin Cave actually like inside?

Enormous, wet and theatrically lit. The route runs about three kilometers through a sequence of chambers, and the scale is what stays with you - the central hall is 175 meters wide, the ceiling reaches 150 meters, and the formations include a thirty-meter column that the guides use as a scale reference. It was opened to visitors in 1980 and became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. The lighting is colored, which some photographers dislike, but the path is well built and the handrails are where you need them.

Is this itinerary worth doing outside spring?

The cave half, yes - it runs year-round and is arguably better in summer, when the sixteen degrees feels like relief. The azalea half, no: outside the bloom the reserve is a green plateau with a reduced ticket and nothing flowering, and we would rather swap that day for the Huangguoshu waterfall or the Zhijin Grand Canyon than sell you a flower trip with no flowers. Tell us your dates and we will tell you which version of this itinerary actually works.

How far is the driving?

Anshun to Zhijin is 120 kilometers, about two hours through the Bijie plateau; Zhijin to the azalea reserve is another ninety minutes; and the reserve back to Anshun is two and a half hours. No single leg exceeds three hours and the roads are good expressway for most of the way, but this is a plateau itinerary and the scenery is the compensation - terraced hillsides, coal towns and deep gorge country between the two prefectures.

Can children manage the Zhijin Cave underground route?

Yes, with a caveat. The route is three kilometers with several hundred steps and takes two and a half hours, which is a long time underground for a child under six. The path is safe and lit, the temperature is constant, and there are exit points, but the experience is dark, wet and quiet. Families with young children usually do better with the shorter Huangguoshu itinerary; families with children over eight tend to love this one, because caves are caves.

What else is there in Anshun?

The Ming city wall and the old quarter, which is where the itinerary starts - a restored west gate, a Confucian temple courtyard and a network of lanes with the best street food in the province. Anshun was the administrative seat of the Ming southwest, and the food reflects a garrison town's habits: sour, fermented, cheap and eaten standing up. It is also twenty-five minutes from Guiyang by high-speed train, which makes it an easy first or last night.

Does a spring cave trip need anything beyond a normal visa?

No: Bijie and the Zhijin cave country sit outside every restricted zone. 50 nationalities enter visa-free for up to 30 days under the unilateral scheme, and 57 nationalities can use the 240-hour transit at 65 ports with an onward third-country ticket. The only booking formality that bites here is the cave's timed entry, not immigration.
