Overview

This is the itinerary for travellers who have had enough temples. Guizhou has become a Chinese science destination almost by accident: the province's karst depressions make natural radio-quiet bowls, and one of them holds FAST, the five-hundred-meter telescope that has been the most sensitive radio instrument on earth since it was completed in 2016.

The second half is engineering of a different kind. Pingtang Bridge carries a motorway across the Caodu River gorge on three diamond-shaped towers, the tallest 332 meters - the highest concrete bridge tower in the world - with a deck 300 meters above the water. The viewing service area beside it opened in 2020 and has a small bridge museum. Neither site is on the standard foreign-tourist circuit, and together they make a tight, strange, very good three days.

Highlights

  • FAST: the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, 500 meters across
  • 4,450 movable reflector panels focusing on a receiver suspended above the dish
  • The radio-quiet core zone, where every electronic device goes into a locker
  • Pingtang Bridge: a 332-meter concrete tower, the tallest of its kind in the world
  • The Gustav Lindenthal Medal, awarded at the International Bridge Conference in 2021
  • Pingtang's tiankeng sinkhole country, a short drive from the bridge

Itinerary

Day 1Pingtang: the Astronomy Town and the Eye

FAST - the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope - is the largest single-dish radio telescope in the world, built in a natural karst depression at Dawayou, 500 meters across and assembled from 4,450 triangular panels that move to focus the dish. It was completed in September 2016 and has been the most sensitive radio instrument on the planet since; the science it does is mostly about pulsars, fast radio bursts and the hydrogen distribution of the early universe, which your guide will explain in the visitor center rather than at the rim.

The viewing platform itself is free; what you pay for is the shuttle, the astronomy experience center and the planetarium - 140 yuan as a package, which is the ticket the base sells. The core zone is a radio-quiet area: phones, cameras, smart watches, Bluetooth earphones and power banks all go into free lockers at the visitor center, and the twenty-kilometer road in is closed to private vehicles. That enforced silence is, unexpectedly, the best part of the day.

Day 2The Sky Bridge and the Karst Sinkholes

Pingtang Bridge carries the Pingtang-Luodian expressway across the Caodu River gorge on three diamond-shaped towers, the tallest of which is 332 meters - the highest concrete bridge tower in the world, on a deck 300 meters above the river, with a 550-meter main span. It opened to traffic in 2019 and won the Gustav Lindenthal Medal at the International Bridge Conference in June 2021; the viewing service area beside it opened in October 2020 and includes a small bridge museum.

The surrounding country is the 'heavenly' cluster the local tourism authority markets - tiankeng sinkholes, tianqiao natural bridges, tianchuang sky windows - and the Pingtang Tiankeng group is a short drive from the bridge. The combination is unusual for a cultural itinerary: one day of engineering and astronomy, one of geology, all within forty minutes of each other and none of it on the standard foreign-tourist circuit.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3Pingtang Departure

Pingtang is roughly 160 kilometers from Guiyang, mostly on expressway, which makes a two-night stay practical inside a longer Guizhou itinerary. If you are continuing to Libo, the drive south is two and a half hours and passes through the same karst country you have been looking at from the bridge.

Trip Notes

Published: November 2026 — prices and itinerary reviewed on this date; later updates are shown in the revision note below.

Please read the notes below before you book. The FAST core zone is a radio-quiet area: phones, cameras, smart watches, fitness bands, Bluetooth earphones and power banks must be left in free lockers at the visitor center, and there are no exceptions for press or professionals. Plan for a day without a camera. The shuttle into the basin is compulsory and the walk from the drop-off to the viewing platform is about 800 meters with 700-odd steps, or a paid elevator.

Q: Can I take photographs at FAST?
A: Not at the telescope. The core zone is a radio-quiet area and all electronic devices - phones, cameras, watches, fitness trackers, Bluetooth earpieces, power banks - must be stored in free lockers at the visitor center before you board the shuttle. This is enforced at a security check, not suggested. There are official photographers at the viewing platform who will take a print for about 30 yuan, and the astronomy center and town outside the zone are camera-friendly. Plan for a day that is not a photo day.

Q: Is it worth the trip if I am not a science person?
A: Yes, for the scale and the silence. Standing at the rim of a 500-meter dish in a forested karst depression, with no phone signal and no camera, is a genuinely unusual experience - the enforced quiet is the most memorable part for most visitors. The astronomy center explains pulsars and fast radio bursts with good interactive exhibits; if that leaves you cold, the bridge and the sinkhole country the next day are purely visual. Families with children over eight tend to rate this as the highlight of a Guizhou trip.

Q: How tall is the Pingtang bridge, exactly?
A: The tallest tower is 332 meters from foundation to top - the highest concrete bridge tower in the world at the time of construction - and the deck sits about 300 meters above the Caodu River. The bridge is 2,135 meters long with a 550-meter main span, carrying the Pingtang-Luodian expressway. It opened to traffic in 2019 and won the Gustav Lindenthal Medal at the International Bridge Conference in June 2021, which is the bridge engineering equivalent of a major award.

Q: Where do we stay?
A: In the astronomy town at Kedu, ten minutes from the FAST visitor center, in a hotel built for the science tourism trade - comfortable, unremarkable, and the only sensible base because the shuttle times are early. The alternative is Pingtang county town, twenty-five minutes further out. Neither is a luxury destination; if you want a premium hotel this itinerary works better as a long day from Guiyang, which we can arrange at the cost of two hours in a vehicle each way.

Q: Is this suitable for children?
A: It is one of the best family days in Guizhou, with two conditions. Children must be old enough to hand over their devices without a meltdown - in practice eight and up - and the 700 steps to the viewing platform are a real climb, though the paid elevator removes them. The astronomy center is hands-on and pitched at exactly this audience. Under-fives get less from it; the bridge service area, which has a playground and a model exhibit, is the better stop for them.

Q: How does this fit into a longer Guizhou trip?
A: It is 160 kilometers from Guiyang, mostly expressway, so it works as a two-night insert between Guiyang and Libo - the drive south from Pingtang to Libo is two and a half hours through the same karst country. Our six-day study tour uses it as the science spine. If you are coming from Guangxi, the expressway continues south toward Tian'e and the Guangxi border, which makes a Guizhou-Guangxi routing straightforward.

Q: Do I need a visa for this trip?
A: Most travellers do not. China's unilateral visa-free scheme covers 50 countries for stays of up to 30 days, and the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme covers travellers from 57 countries entering through 65 designated ports - Guiyang Longdongbao is one of the ports on that list, which makes a short Guizhou trip workable on transit status alone if your routing qualifies. Both schemes are reviewed periodically, so we check your nationality and entry port against the current National Immigration Administration list before you book flights.
