Overview

Three days is the honest minimum for the Anshun basin, and this itinerary spends them on the two things that justify the trip rather than spreading them thin. Huangguoshu gets a full day because it is three separate landscapes inside one park, and Dragon Palace gets a morning because the boat trip through the cave is short and unlike anything else in the province.

The third element is the one most short tours skip: the Tunpu villages. These are the descendants of Ming soldiers garrisoned on the Yunnan road in the 1380s, and six centuries later they still speak an archaic dialect, wear a fourteenth-century cut of dress and perform the masked opera their ancestors used to keep morale up. Tianlong is the best preserved of them, and it turns a waterfall weekend into something with a story attached.

Highlights

  • Huangguoshu in all three sections - Doupotang, Tianshengqiao and the main fall
  • Shuilian Cave, the 134-meter passage with six openings cut behind the waterfall
  • Dragon Palace: forty minutes by boat through a cave system with a river inside it
  • Tianlong Tunpu, a 1380s garrison village where Dixi masked opera is still performed
  • Anshun night-market food: rice noodles in fermented soybean paste and pot-stickers fried in egg

Itinerary

Day 1Anshun Arrival: the Old City After Dark

Anshun is a small city with a large history: it was the administrative seat of the Ming southwest, and the wall that survives in fragments along the old town was built in the fourteenth century to hold the Yunnan road. The evening walk takes in the restored West Gate, the Confucian temple courtyard and the network of lanes behind it, where the food is better than the architecture.

Anshun eating is a serious business and the local palate runs sour and fermented - the signature dish is a hotpot of sour soup with fish or pork, and the street food includes grilled tofu cubes, rice noodles in fermented soybean paste, and a sweet glutinous rice cake steamed in bamboo leaf. Your guide orders, you eat, and the walk continues; the whole evening is under three kilometers of walking and ends at the hotel.

Day 2Huangguoshu: Asia's Largest Waterfall

Huangguoshu is 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide, the largest waterfall in Asia by volume in flood season, and it is not a single sight but a park of three: Doupotang, the wide curtain where the 1986 television adaptation of Journey to the West filmed its closing sequence; Tianshengqiao, a karst water-and-stone forest downstream with the Silver Chain Falling into the Pool cascade at its far end; and the main fall itself, which you can walk behind through Shuilian Cave, a 134-meter passage with six openings cut through the travertine.

The order matters. We start at Doupotang while the tour buses are still at the gate, work downstream through the lower half of Tianshengqiao - the upper half is a pleasant walk with no payoff, and skipping it saves two hours of queueing on stone stairs - and reach the main fall in the afternoon when the light comes over the rim and the spray throws rainbows. The park ticket is valid for three days and the shuttle bus is compulsory, since the three sections are several kilometers apart and private cars cannot enter. Bring a poncho for the cave; you will be wet, and you will not mind.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3Dragon Palace Cave and the Tianlong Garrison

Dragon Palace is a karst cave system with a river running through it: you board a small boat at the entrance and drift through a sequence of chambers lit from below, with the roof anywhere from three to thirty meters above your head. It is the largest water cave of its kind in China and the boat trip runs about forty minutes; the elevators at the far end save a stiff climb. Entry is 60 yuan, the shuttle 20 and the first-cave boat 35, all of which we fold into one ticket so there is nothing to settle at the gate.

The afternoon is Tianlong Tunpu, thirty minutes away - the best-preserved of the Ming garrison villages, with stone walls, a working temple hill and a Dixi opera performed on a stone stage by farmers who have inherited the roles. In the evening, back in Anshun, walk the old city wall and eat the local specialty: Anshun rice noodles with a fermented soybean paste that tastes stronger than it sounds, and small pot-sticker dumplings fried in a beaten egg.

Trip Notes

Published: November 2026 — prices and itinerary reviewed on this date; later updates are shown in the revision note below.

Please read the notes below before you book. This is a short trip with two full days of walking, one of them wet: the cave passage behind Huangguoshu sprays continuously and the walkways at Tianshengqiao are slick. Waterproof shoes with grip matter more than a rain jacket. The Dragon Palace boat is not suitable for anyone who dislikes enclosed spaces, and there is a low ceiling in two of the chambers - we can substitute the Tianxingqiao walk if that is a problem.

Is three days enough for Huangguoshu?

Yes, if the three days are spent here rather than spread across the province. Huangguoshu needs a full day - three sections, a shuttle between them, and a cave passage behind the fall - and Dragon Palace plus Tianlong Tunpu fill a second. The third day is arrival or departure. What three days does not allow is Libo or the Miao villages, which are four to five hours away in opposite directions; if you want those, the six-day classic is the right shape.

When does the waterfall actually have water?

Year-round, but the volume changes by a factor of five. The flood season runs May to October, with June and July the heaviest - at that point the spray reaches the far walkway and the cave passage is genuinely wet. November to April is the dry season: the curtain narrows into separate falls and you can see the travertine face behind it, which some photographers prefer. The park ticket is the same in both seasons at 160 yuan, with a 150 yuan off-season rate from December to February.

What is the Dragon Palace actually like inside?

It is a limestone cave system with a river running through the bottom of it, and you see it from a small open boat: about forty minutes through a sequence of chambers with the roof anywhere from three to thirty meters above the water, lit from below so the stalactites read as columns. Two sections require you to duck. It is the largest water cave of its kind in China, and the boats are quiet enough that you hear water dripping the whole way. Anyone claustrophobic should say so - the alternative is the Tianxingqiao surface walk, which is excellent.

Is Tianlong Tunpu a real village or a reconstruction?

It is a working village with tourism infrastructure, which is a different thing from a reconstruction. The stone walls, gates and courtyard houses are original Ming and Qing structures, the residents are the descendants of the garrison, and the Dixi opera is performed by farmers who inherited the roles rather than by a hired troupe. What has been added is a ticket office, a car park and a performance schedule. The 35 yuan old town ticket includes the opera; the temple hill above is another 25 and worth the twenty-minute climb.

Can we do this from Guiyang as a day trip instead?

You can, and plenty of operators sell it that way - but you lose the cave passage and the evening. Guiyang to Huangguoshu is two hours each way, which turns a six-hour park into a twelve-hour day and puts you at the gate in the middle of the tour-bus window. Staying in Anshun puts you at Doupotang before eight, which is worth more than the hotel night costs. The same logic applies to Dragon Palace: it is thirty minutes from Anshun and ninety from Guiyang.

What should we eat here?

Anshun food is sour and fermented, and it is the best introduction to Guizhou cooking before the cities gentrify it. The local rice noodle comes in a fermented soybean paste broth that tastes stronger than it smells; pot-stickers are fried in beaten egg and served as a single sheet; and the sour-soup hotpot - tomato fermented with rice liquor - is the province's signature dish. Your guide orders family style, which is how it is meant to be eaten, and we brief the kitchen on allergies at booking.

Is three days in Guizhou workable visa-free?

Yes on either scheme, and three days leaves a wide margin. The unilateral policy gives 50 nationalities 30 days with no ticket condition; the 240-hour transit gives 57 nationalities ten days at 65 ports if you hold an onward ticket to a third country. The shorter the trip, the less the immigration question matters compared with flight availability into Guiyang.
