The paths on this walk are not hiking trails in the modern sense. They are the stone stairways that connect the terrace villages to their fields, and they are still used for exactly that purpose - which is why they go where they do and why they are as steep as they are.
The day climbs steadily from a Zhuang village, first between the terraces and then along the contour as the slope steepens, before reaching the viewpoints where the whole amphitheatre of fields opens out at once. Walking is on narrow bunds in single file, with wet stone in places, and the descent on the far side is harder on the knees than the climb. Your guide can shorten it for anyone who prefers.
The transfer from Guilin is roughly two and a half hours each way, so this is a genuinely full day. Travellers who want the terraces in better light can add a night in a village guesthouse; ask us and we will price it separately.
Morning — the drive in
The road from Guilin climbs into the hills of Longsheng for roughly two and a half hours before the terraces come into view: contour after contour of flooded or green steps following the shape of the mountain. The paths you will walk today are not hiking trails in the modern sense — they are the stone stairways that connect the villages to their fields, and they are still used for exactly that.
Late morning — the climb
The walk starts at one of the Zhuang villages and goes up on stone steps, first between the terraces and then along the contour as the slope steepens. It is sustained climbing rather than scrambling, with the surface uneven and wet in places, and the bunds of the terraces narrow enough that you walk them in single file. Your guide sets a pace that leaves time to stop and look back, which is the point of climbing in the first place.
Lunch
A village restaurant partway up, or a packed lunch carried from Guilin depending on the route that day.
Afternoon — the ridge and the descent
Above the villages the path reaches the viewpoints the terraces are named for, where the whole amphitheatre of fields opens out at once, and then begins the descent on a different stairway towards the next valley. The second half of the walk is harder on the knees than the first, and your guide can shorten it for anyone who would rather not take the full descent.
Late afternoon — the drive back
Down to the vehicle and the drive back to Guilin, arriving in the evening. Walkers who want to stay longer can take a night in a village guesthouse instead; ask us and we will price it separately.

Please read the notes below before you book. They cover entry formalities, pace, weather and what to bring.
Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.
Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.
Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.
Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
