Li River Essence Cruise Day Tour: Guilin to Yangshuo

A single day built around one boat trip, and the reason it is worth the drive is that the stretch between Guilin and Yangshuo is where the karst towers stand closest to the water and stack into ridge after receding ridge. You board near the city, spend roughly four hours on the river, and pass the two landmarks everyone asks for: the Nine Horses Fresco and the reach at Xingping that appears on the 20-yuan note.

Lunch is served on board. You disembark at Yangshuo, have time for West Street, and drive back to Guilin in the late afternoon. Cabin class is confirmed at the time of booking and priced accordingly.

One honest note: in the dry season, and after heavy rain, operators sometimes shorten the run or change the boarding pier. Your guide confirms the arrangement the day before and adjusts the Yangshuo side of the day if the river has other ideas.

How long are we on the boat?

Roughly four hours, boarding near Guilin in the morning and disembarking at Yangshuo. This is the stretch of the South China Karst, inscribed by UNESCO in 2007, where the towers stand closest to the water and stack into ridge after receding ridge. Lunch is served on board, so the four hours are comfortable.

What is the Nine Horses Fresco?

A cliff face whose mineral staining is traditionally read as nine horses in different postures. Counting them is a local game, and guides will tell you that spotting all nine is rare. Whether you see nine or three, it is the best-known single landmark on the river.

Is the 20-yuan note viewpoint on this route?

Yes. The reach at Xingping, printed on the back of the 20-yuan note, is on the route and you pass it directly. It is the photograph most visitors are carrying in their heads before they arrive. Your guide will tell you when to be on deck.

Is lunch included?

Yes, lunch is served on board as part of the cruise. It is a set meal rather than a choice, so tell us about dietary requirements when you book and the operator will be notified. Tea and water are available throughout.

Do we get time in Yangshuo?

Yes. You disembark at Yangshuo, have time for West Street, and then drive back to Guilin. Yangshuo is small enough to walk across in an hour. If you would rather stay the night in Yangshuo than return, tell us and we will convert the day into an overnight.

Are the cormorant fishermen real?

The birds are genuinely worked by fishermen, but sightings are seasonal and staged demonstrations exist alongside working ones, so we do not promise them. What you will reliably see on the shallower reaches is bamboo rafts and the ordinary river traffic. If a cormorant boat is out, your guide will point it out.

What if the water is high?

Guilin is wet from April to June and in high water the cruise is shortened, which is a safety decision made by the operator rather than by us. We will tell you as early as possible. In that case we add time at Xingping on the bank instead.
