A two-day private walking programme covering Guangzhou's historic districts and its oldest park. Day one follows Shamian Island, Xiguan and the Pearl River; day two covers Yuexiu Park, the Chen Clan Academy and the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees. Around ten kilometres in total, one hotel night included.
Morning - Shamian Island
Shamian is a sandbank in the Pearl River that was divided into British and French concessions after 1859 and laid out with gardens, consulates, churches and trading houses. Two thirds of a mile of arcaded buildings survive on a car-free island, and the banyan avenue in the middle is where the city comes to be photographed on a wedding day. Your guide reads the facades - the verandas, the shuttered windows, the colonial-era banks - and explains how the treaty-port century shaped the city.
Late morning - Xiguan and the arcades
Cross into the older Chinese city. Xiguan was the merchant quarter, and its qilou shophouses - a shop at street level, a home above, and a covered walkway in front for shade and shelter - still line several streets. You walk Enning Road and the restored Yongqing Fang lanes, past ancestral halls and small temples.
Lunch
Congee, rice-noodle rolls and a Cantonese soup at a neighbourhood restaurant.
Afternoon - The Pearl River waterfront
Walk down to the river and along the promenade, past the riverside churches and the docks that made Guangzhou China's southern trading gate, with the Canton Tower across the water on the far bank.
Evening - Free by the river
The walk ends at the waterfront, where you can stay for the evening lights or be returned to your hotel.

Yuexiu Park
Yuexiu is Guangzhou's oldest park and its civic symbol: the Five Rams statue commemorates the legend of the five immortals who brought rice to a city that had none, and the Ming-era city wall still runs across the hill above it. Inside the park, the Zhenhai Tower, built in 1380, houses the Guangzhou Museum and holds the city's history in five floors.
Temple of the Six Banyan Trees
The temple has been on this site for more than 1,400 years, and its name was given by the poet Su Shi in 1100. Its Flower Pagoda was rebuilt in 1097 and at its original height was the tallest structure in the city, with an outer corridor on every level.
Lunch stop
A Cantonese lunch or a dim sum stop on the way.

A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.
Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.
Q: How do we book and pay?
