Overview

The west of the old city is flat, dense and continuous, which makes it the best half of Guangzhou to walk. Everything on this route sits within a couple of kilometres: the finest Qing hall in Guangdong, the arcaded merchant streets around it, the courtyard mansions of the families who paid for both, and the canal that carried their goods.

The day begins at the Chen Clan Academy, subscribed between 1888 and 1894 by Chen families from seventy-two counties and the Guangdong Folk Art Museum since 1959. It continues on foot through the Xiguan lanes and finishes on the water at Lychee Bay and the Liwan Museum's Xiguan Mansion.

A vehicle stands by for transfers and for the middle of the day, but the route is walked. Entrance tickets are payable locally and confirmed in your final quotation.

Itinerary

Day 1Guangzhou Walking Tour: the Chen Clan Academy, the Xiguan Lanes and Lychee Bay

Why this walk works
The west of the old city is flat, dense and continuous, which makes it the best half of Guangzhou to cover on foot. Everything on this route sits within a couple of kilometres: the finest Qing hall in Guangdong, the arcaded merchant streets around it, the courtyard mansions of the families who paid for both, and the canal that carried their goods. A vehicle stays within call for transfers and for the middle of the day, but the day itself is walked.

Morning - the Chen Clan Academy
Begin indoors and early, before the coach groups arrive. The Chen Clan Academy was subscribed between 1888 and 1894 by Chen families from seventy-two counties of Guangdong and built to lodge clan sons coming to Guangzhou for the imperial examinations. It became a school after 1905, and since 1959 it has been the Guangdong Folk Art Museum; it has been a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit since 1988. Nineteen halls and courtyards on 13,200 square metres, with wood carving, stone carving, brick carving, lime sculpture, ceramic ridge figures and cast metalwork on every band of the structure. Your guide reads it as a list of trades, not as decoration.

Late morning - the lanes of Xiguan
On foot from the academy the streets change character within a block: the shophouse arcades of Shangxiajiu and Enning Road, built to give shade and shelter from sun and sudden rain; the Cantonese opera museum and the restored lanes beside it; the small trades still working at ground level under the arcades. Your guide explains how a climate produced a building type, and then how that building type produced a commercial culture.

Lunch
A Cantonese lunch in the district.

Afternoon - Lychee Bay and the Xiguan mansions
The walk closes on the water. The Lychee Bay waterway and Liwan Lake have been reopened along their old canal-side lanes, and the Xiguan Mansion in the Liwan Museum - the best surviving courtyard house of the district's merchant families, with its high ceilings, interior light wells and carved screens - explains what the families who built this quarter lived in. It is a small building that makes sense of a whole day's walking.

Trip Notes

What this day is. A flat private walking day through the Xiguan quarter, with a vehicle on standby. It is the least strenuous of our Guangzhou walking routes and the one that stays closest to everyday city life.

Practical notes. The streets are flat but narrow and busy, particularly on Shangxiajiu, and there is very little shade in the middle of the day; mornings and late afternoons are the comfortable hours. The academy is quietest at opening. Entrance tickets are payable locally.

Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.

Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.

Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.

Q: How do we book and pay?
A: Send us your travel dates and group size for a same-day quotation. A deposit confirms the booking, the balance is due before arrival, and prices are guaranteed for 7 days.
