Guangzhou Half-Day: Chimelong Safari Park

Most zoos in China are built around cages; this one is built around herds, which is why it is worth half a day even for travellers who would not normally visit a wildlife park. It opened on 26 December 1997 in Panyu and holds more than five hundred species and over twenty thousand animals, kept in large open enclosures and viewed either from a small train that runs through the habitats or from a cable car above them.

The animals people come for are specific. It holds the world's only surviving giant panda triplets and the largest koala colony outside Australia, and it has bred Chinese firsts including black leaf-monkey twins and a proboscis monkey infant. The route is planned so that you reach the train before the queues and then work against the flow of the crowd for the rest of the morning.

Admission is not included in the price shown - the standard adult ticket is CNY 300, with children, seniors and concession tickets at CNY 210 and youth tickets at CNY 240 - and is payable locally. The park is open 9:30 to 18:00. If your family would prefer a full day, we will extend the programme and the vehicle.

Admission to Chimelong Safari Park is not included in the price shown - the standard adult ticket is CNY 300, children, seniors and concession tickets are CNY 210, and youth tickets are CNY 240, all payable locally. Any in-park optional activity, keeper experience or animal feeding session is also payable locally. Meals, personal expenses, gratuities and any hotel night are excluded.

What this half day is. A private vehicle and guide taking you to Chimelong Safari Park and managing the morning so that the train and the main animal areas are done before the crowds build. Your guide accompanies you into the park.

Practical notes. The park is about forty to sixty minutes from the city centre depending on your hotel, and it opens at 9:30, so a morning start is the sensible one. There is a lot of walking in the heat and a lot of standing; strollers and wheelchairs can be rented at the gate. Admission is payable locally. This is our only family-oriented half day in Guangzhou - tell us the ages of the children and we will tailor the pacing.

Q: Is this tour private or shared?
A: It is a private tour. Only your own party travels with the guide and vehicle, so the pace and the order of stops can be adjusted on the day.

Q: What is the best season for this itinerary?
A: April to June and September to November bring the mildest weather and clearest light. The programme runs year round, and we adjust the daily timings in mid-summer and winter.

Q: Can you handle dietary requirements and accessibility needs?
A: Yes. Vegetarian, halal, gluten-free and allergy-aware menus are arranged when you tell us in advance. Step-free and low-mobility versions of the route can also be planned.
