Overview

A two-day private stopover programme in Guangzhou for travellers who want to break a long-haul journey rather than sit in an airport hotel. Highlights

  • Arrival day: dim sum, Shamian Island and the Canton Tower
  • One night in a 4-star Guangzhou hotel with breakfast
  • Second day: morning tea, a market walk and the Cantonese kitchen
  • Dim sum, roast meats and rice-noodle rolls
  • Airport transfers at both ends
  • Private guide and vehicle throughout

Itinerary

Day 1Guangzhou Layover: Canton Tower, Shamian Island and Dim Sum

Airport collection
Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, and luggage stays in the vehicle so the day runs without a detour to a hotel. Timing is confirmed against your flight numbers, with a margin for the return check-in.

Dim sum lunch
Guangzhou is the home of yum cha, and a layover in this city is the obvious excuse. You eat har gow, siu mai, char siu bao and cheung fun in a family teahouse, with a pot of tea and the two-finger thank-you.

Shamian Island
Walk the car-free island whose arcaded colonial buildings date from the treaty-port period after 1859, with banyan avenues and river views on both sides.

Canton Tower and the waterfront
Cross to the Haixinsha promenade for the classic view of the 600-metre Canton Tower and the Zhujiang New Town skyline, with a short river crossing if time allows.

Return to the airport
Drive back to Baiyun with time for check-in, or continue to your hotel if you are staying the night.

Day 2Guangzhou: Morning Tea, Dim Sum and the Cantonese Kitchen

Morning - Yum cha, the Cantonese institution
Guangzhou drinks tea in the morning, and eats while it does. You sit in a family teahouse where the trolleys still come round and order the standard set: har gow, steamed prawn dumplings with a pleated translucent skin; siu mai; char siu bao, the barbecue pork bun; cheung fun, rolled rice-noodle sheets; and a pot of pu'er or chrysanthemum tea. Your guide explains the etiquette - tapping two fingers on the table to thank whoever pours, and leaving the lid ajar when you want more water.

Late morning - Market and kitchen
Walk a wet market to see the produce that defines Cantonese food: live seafood in tanks, rice noodles made fresh, flowering chives, water chestnuts and a dozen varieties of dried seafood. Then step into a restaurant kitchen at a quiet hour to watch the wok work that gives Cantonese stir-fries their smoky edge, and see rice-noodle sheets steamed and rolled to order.

Lunch
A Cantonese restaurant lunch built around steamed fish, roast meats and seasonal greens.

Afternoon - Tea, and the old commercial quarter
Taste two or three teas at a specialist shop in the old commercial quarter, then walk the covered arcades of the Xiguan district, where the shophouse colonnades were designed for a climate of sun and sudden rain.

Evening - Dinner and a roasts shop
Dinner features Cantonese roast meats - char siu, roast goose and crisp pork belly - carved at a shop counter and eaten with rice.
