Guangzhou Excursion Tours
The best excursion out of Guangzhou goes inland to Kaiping, where the diaolou towers stand across the villages and fields. Built by emigrant families in the early twentieth century and inscribed by UNESCO in 2007, they mix Chinese, European and Southeast Asian architectural detail in a way that has no real equivalent. The day tour concentrates on the towers and the villages; the two-day versions add the city highlights, or Xiguan old town, on the other day.
Kaiping is about two hours from Guangzhou by road and the towers are spread across several villages, so a private vehicle is essential. The tour is private with an English-speaking guide throughout.
