Can I apply for a Chinese visa online?

Not entirely. China does not currently offer a fully online tourist visa application for most nationalities. In practice you complete the application form online, then submit your passport and supporting documents in person at a Chinese embassy, consulate, or authorised Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC).

The process is:

  1. Complete the online application form at the official CVASC website and print it.

  2. Book an appointment at your nearest centre.

  3. Attend in person with your passport, photos, proof of onward travel and accommodation, and — for business or long-stay visas — an invitation letter.

  4. Collect your passport with the visa, usually within four business days.

How far in advance should I apply?

Apply 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Processing normally takes around four business days, but it stretches considerably during Chinese New Year and the summer holiday peak.

Do I still need to do this if my country is visa-free?

No. If your nationality is on the 30-day visa-free list and your trip fits the permitted purposes, you simply board your flight — no application and no fee. Check the current list before you book, because these policies carry expiry dates and are revised by the National Immigration Administration several times a year.

Travellers from Singapore and Malaysia are covered by mutual visa-exemption agreements rather than the unilateral list, and also enter visa-free for up to 30 days.

Need an invitation letter?

For business visits and longer stays, a Chinese host company or authorised agency must issue one. LinkedTours issues invitation letters for clients booked on our itineraries. Request one →
