The Suzhou Industrial Park was set up in 1994 as a joint venture between the Chinese and Singaporean governments and is now one of the largest manufacturing clusters in the country, with roughly 4,000 foreign-invested enterprises. This five-day programme is arranged for companies assessing it as a sourcing or production base, and it is built around meetings rather than presentations.
Days one to four are the working part: the park briefing, two plant visits with access to the production floor, a supply chain session, and a networking dinner. The last day is deliberately left light - half a day in the old city and a departure from Shanghai, so that the trip can be extended or compressed around your own meetings.
Morning — Arrival and the Transfer to Suzhou
Groups reach Suzhou through Shanghai. Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Pudong or Hongqiao with a name sign, the luggage is loaded, and you transfer to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for the high-speed service south. The train covers the hundred kilometres to Suzhou in about half an hour, and Suzhou North station, opened with the line in 2011, puts you twenty minutes from the old city and ten minutes from the Industrial Park. Hotel check-in and lunch follow.
Afternoon — the Suzhou Industrial Park: a Working Briefing
The Suzhou Industrial Park is the first intergovernmental cooperation project between China and Singapore. The agreement was signed on 26 February 1994 and the first phase broke ground on low-lying farmland east of the old city the same year; it is now one of the largest manufacturing clusters in the country, with roughly four thousand foreign-invested enterprises inside it. The session is with the park's administrative committee rather than a commercial agency, and it is worth treating as a working meeting rather than an introduction: how land and utilities are allocated, what the park is in a position to promise and what it is not, the approval path for a new plant or an expansion, how environmental and safety permits are handled, and how the park recruits and houses technicians. Bring the questions you would ask before committing a line to a site.
Evening — Welcome Dinner and Programme Framing
Over dinner your guide sets out what the next three days cover - a precision components plant, an electronics assembly plant, and a session on how goods and components actually move in and out of the Yangtze Delta - and asks each member of the group to name the single question they most want answered by Friday.
Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.
Accommodation
Hotel in Suzhou city centre (4-star international brand or equivalent).
Morning — the Production Floor
The plant is matched to your sector and confirmed in writing before arrival, with a substitute named in advance if the first choice cannot receive a foreign group on the day. Visitors are asked for full names and passport details ahead of the visit for site access, and photography inside the plant is restricted. You walk the floor with the line manager rather than a tour guide: the machining or forming stages and the transfer between them, where parts are gauged, and how a line is set up and changed over. The questions worth asking are the ones a catalogue cannot answer - what the cycle time actually is, how much of the line runs unattended, and what happens when a tool wears.
Late Morning — Inspection and Traceability
The quality manager takes the group through the inspection stages: incoming material checks, first-article inspection on a new part, in-process gauging and final inspection, and the record that ties a finished batch back to a material lot. Ask which measurements a customer is permitted to audit and which are held internally, and what the plant does with a batch that has to be held back.
Afternoon — the Commercial Session
A working session with the plant's sales and engineering leads on the practical side of placing work here: minimum order quantities, lead times for a first order against a repeat, who pays for tooling and how it is amortised, the sample and approval process for a new part, payment terms, and what changes if volumes double. Bring your own drawings or specifications if you want the conversation to be concrete rather than general.
Evening — At Your Leisure
The evening is free. Your guide will suggest restaurants near the hotel and can arrange transport back into the park district if the group wants to keep talking over dinner.

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.

Hotel in Suzhou city centre (4-star international brand or equivalent).
Morning — Surface-Mount Assembly
The Industrial Park concentrates the part of Chinese manufacturing that foreign buyers usually come to see, and electronics assembly is the largest single piece of it. The morning is spent on a surface-mount line: how boards are loaded, where the solder paste is printed and the components placed, how automated optical inspection works and what it rejects, and how boards are reflowed and tested. The useful questions here concern changeover - how long it takes to move from one product to another, how many different assemblies the line runs in a week, and how much of the quality control is automated rather than human.
Late Morning — How a Supplier Gets Approved
The purchasing lead explains how a component supplier reaches the approved-vendor list: the sample stage, the audit, what is checked on a first order, and what causes a supplier to be dropped. Ask how far down the tiers the plant actually knows its own supply chain, and what share of components arrives from outside the region.
Afternoon — the Local Parts Base
A short visit to a component or sub-assembly supplier in the park, or a session with two of them at the hotel, on what the cluster around Suzhou can and cannot supply locally: the categories where a buyer gets genuine competition on price, the ones that still come from Shenzhen or from overseas, and how much of the delivered cost is material against labour and logistics.
Evening — At Your Leisure
The evening is free.
Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.
Accommodation
Hotel in Suzhou city centre (4-star international brand or equivalent).
Morning — the Exhibition Centre
The park's exhibition centre sets out the thirty-year build-out: the original 1994 master plan against what was actually built, the phase across the Yangtze at Nantong, and the land and utility standards that incoming plants are held to. It is the shortest way to see how a manufacturing cluster was planned rather than allowed to happen, and it gives the rest of the week its geography.
Late Morning — the Supply Chain Session
A freight forwarder operating out of Shanghai and Taicang takes the group through how goods leave: which port or airport handles what, bonded warehousing inside the park and why it changes the customs position, the paperwork for an export consignment, and realistic transit times by sea, rail and air. The numbers worth pressing on are the ones that decide a sourcing case - landed cost by route, the cost of a missed sailing, and how inland transport compares with moving the plant closer to the coast.
Afternoon — Open for Your Own Meetings
The afternoon is deliberately left open. Your guide can arrange transport and interpretation for meetings of your own, or hold the room for internal discussion.
Evening — Working Dinner with Local Manufacturers
Dinner brings the group together with local manufacturers and their procurement staff, seated so that each table mixes visitors and hosts. Expect the conversation to turn practical quickly; the programme has no speeches.
Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included.
Accommodation
Hotel in Suzhou city centre (4-star international brand or equivalent).
Morning — the Humble Administrator's Garden
Laid out from 1509 by a retired official and rebuilt and extended by later owners, the Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest of Suzhou's nine UNESCO-listed classical gardens and the one that explains the tradition most clearly: water at the centre, buildings positioned to borrow the view of what lies beyond the wall, and a route designed to be walked in a particular order. It is the old city's counterweight to the industrial park you have spent the week in, and it is ten kilometres away.
Late Morning — the Canal Lanes
A walk through Pingjiang Road, the canal street whose layout has not changed since the Song dynasty: single-storey houses on both sides of the water, stone bridges at intervals, and the basic unit of a city that the Grand Canal made rich six centuries before the park was drawn up.
Afternoon — Departure
Lunch in the old city, then transfer to Suzhou North Railway Station for the high-speed service to Shanghai Hongqiao, or straight to Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao airport for the international flight, with assistance on luggage and check-in. Groups extending the trip can continue from Shanghai to Hangzhou or Nanjing on the same rail corridor.
