Overview

A private day that covers the two things a first visit to Hong Kong should cover: the old Chinese city at street level, and the view from above it. The morning is Central — Man Mo Temple, with its coils of hanging incense, and Tai Kwun, the former Central Police Station compound of courthouses, barracks and prison, restored and open to the public. The afternoon belongs to the Peak Tram, which has been climbing out of Central since 1888, and to the Lugard Road path along the shoulder of Victoria Peak, where the harbour, Kowloon and the islands spread out below.

The day ends with dinner in Lan Kwai Fong, in the lanes above Central. Lunch and dinner are included; no hotel night is part of this tour, so it also works as a first or last day attached to a longer itinerary. Madam Tussauds sits beside the Peak Tower if you want to go in — that admission is at your own expense. Walking is moderate: a few flights of steps at the temple, and a short, level path on the Peak that you can cut short at any point.

Itinerary

Morning — Man Mo Temple and Tai Kwun
Visit Man Mo Temple, built in 1847 and dedicated to the gods of literature and war, where incense coils hang thickly beneath its tiled roof in keeping with Qing Dynasty tradition. Walk to Tai Kwun, a restored colonial-era police station now a center for arts and heritage, and explore its exhibits on Hong Kong's history.

Afternoon — Victoria Peak
Ride the Peak Tram, a funicular railway that has climbed to Victoria Peak since 1888. At the summit, hike the Lugard Road loop for views of the skyscrapers, Victoria Harbour, and the outlying islands, and visit Madame Tussauds for photos with wax figures of stars such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

Evening — Lan Kwai Fong
Dine at the Luk Yu Tea House, a 1930s-style restaurant known for char siu bao and pigeon clay pot rice. Then explore Lan Kwai Fong's neon-lit bars, or catch a Cantonese opera snippet at the Fringe Club.
